Default New Section Coming...

Hello All,

After Welder & Bluffman2 (we will give him credit) came to me with this idea I thought it was a GREAT idea.

In the next few days I will be adding a section for "Silent Auctions." Mainly what the deal will be is I will place donated items (local tackle shops (hopefully), members & others) up for auction for a 1 month period (I think). Members of the forum will then PM me bids on the item, at the end of the auction I will announce the winner and we will ship it out.

For those donating the items. I will add a LARGE banner ad to the forum when I post (inside the post, to let everyone know that it was you who donated), I will also explain what they have donated with it's suggested retail price.

Currently the proceeds will go to help run this website, with a certain percentage (not sure how much yet) of each sale to a local or national charity (If we can donate enough thoughout the year, I hope to get some of the local guys in a picture to place in our local newspaper).

Keep your eyes out, our first item has been donated by TheMasterOfFishing. Thanks for you donation & I will be working on this tomorrow.

What does everyone think? Good Idea / Bad Idea?

Matt

Matt,

I am not trying to be a kill-joy here. My blather represents some things that should be considered.

What will the shipping terms be? Does the donated item get sent to you, shipping paid by donator; or by you? Or paid by the winning bidder?

Have you thought through the time demand factor? Especially multiple concurrent bids - this could become a big chunk of your day.

What is the arbitration process in the event that the recipeint is dissatisfied with what shows up at their doorstep?

Any minimun and/or maximum in terms of value? A brand new 4 dollar mirrolure in the box would be a good buy at $1.30; but is the cut for the site worth the time put into managing the bid process and shipping?

What are the tax implications in terms of liability for you? They could outweigh any fiscal benefit.

The fact I am asking these questions takes all of the fun out of the concept; I understand that. I hope most them fall into the category of my ignorance (which is a very HUGE category); because I like the concept.

I'll look around to see what I have to donate.

In a silent auction, the previous bids are listed so you know what you need to bid.

In a sealed bid auction, you send a bid in without knowing what the other people have bid and no one knows who is the high bidder until the end.

eBay is effectively a giant silent auction, where most of the action takes place in the closing moments.

Most government and property auctions are sealed bid.

Sealed bids can have a lot of variation and the prices can be anywhere. But you bid once and forget about it until the end when the bids are opened. Silent auctions generally bring more consistent and higher values, but require active bidder participation.
