Most government and property auctions are sealed bid.

Sealed bids can have a lot of variation and the prices can be anywhere. But you bid once and forget about it until the end when the bids are opened. Silent auctions generally bring more consistent and higher values, but require active bidder participation.
Maybe we will have to just have to bid in the forum [ silent auction ] that documents the bid by the the post #

I'd rather ship it direct from us to the winner....just a thought. Saves one shipping cost for someone. We can move through the details over the next week or so.

What will the shipping terms be? Does the donated item get sent to you, shipping paid by donator; or by you? Or paid by the winning bidder?

Have you thought through the time demand factor? Especially multiple concurrent bids - this could become a big chunk of your day.

What is the arbitration process in the event that the recipeint is dissatisfied with what shows up at their doorstep?

Any minimun and/or maximum in terms of value? A brand new 4 dollar mirrolure in the box would be a good buy at $1.30; but is the cut for the site worth the time put into managing the bid process and shipping?

What are the tax implications in terms of liability for you? They could outweigh any fiscal benefit.

The fact I am asking these questions takes all of the fun out of the concept; I understand that. I hope most them fall into the category of my ignorance (which is a very HUGE category); because I like the concept.

I'll look around to see what I have to donate.

Big Al
Big Al,

Here's what I got...

1. Shipping Costs - I have already spoken with AnglerSystems & TheMasterOfFishing & they both said they have no problem with shipping direct. If someone wants to donate but doesn't want to pay for the shipping to either get me the item or get it to the winner then they can PM me and I can work out an arrangement.

2. Time Factor - I'm a Full Service Real Estate Broker on the Outer Banks of NC, so two things come to mind. 1 - the market is extremly slow. 2 - the market is even slower because of the time of the year. So I do have some time on my hands.

3. If someone is not happy with the product that they won via TBR, I will do everything in my power to "make it right" even if that includes me having to buy the time (but hopefully not). Very similar to eBay if we make sure we describe the product well, then we shouldn't face any problems.

4. Price Point - I haven't really thought about that, but I'm not planning on auctioning off items that are $5.00 retail in the store. The first item I got from TheMasterOfFishing is a nice spinning reel. With the holidays coming I figured you can get a good deal on it here as a gift for someone.

5. Tax Implications - That my CPA and I will figure out. Currently the amount of time that I have placed into the site far outways the amount of donations I have gotten so I'm not really worried about that. Hey I don't mind paying some to the IRS, because if I am paying that means I am doing something right.

Al, I appreciate you asking your questions I figure we can try out the auction thing. If it doesn't fly, it doesn't. If it does great!!!!

Matt

Give me a couple of weeks and I'll donate a Venice, La Tuna fishing trip for 4 to be done sometime in January 08 or February......Bring your woolies...........
Another trip you can auction off is an inshore Trout and Redfish fishing the Biloxi Marsh area for whatever time the winner is available. This trip will depart from Bay St Louis, Mississippi
