Kihei is on the west side of Maui. It has the advantage of being fairly well sheltered from the ocean swells, but sees all the trade winds that are funneled through the island. Maui, like all tropical island is volcanic and is comprised of two big volcanos that joined together making it figure 8 shaped. The water is always warm and for all practical purposes, it is summer 365 days a year. It will never go down as the cultural hot spot of the west, but if outdoor sports are your thing, it is heaven. I dive, golf and fish in that order.
It has the frustration of being limited in its resources - like no powdercoating and most engine parts have to be ordered. For example, there is no Suzuki dealer on island. Strangely enough, the Suzuki website shows Valley Ilse Marine a a dealer. I know them well, so I called and asked. Mark's response was "I am?"
There are about 100,000 residents and we have an average daily visitor load of 150,000, so most of the people on the island at any time are visitors. But it works well.
Food and fuel is about 15 percent higher than the mainland, and shipping a boat over is expensive. But I've never had to put antifreeze in my tires.
Welder, that's just plain scary!
