I think you missed the humor in my post.
Changing valve stems when replacing a tire is something I was taught to do at age 14 – I worked at a full service gas station after school & weekends until I graduated high school. New valve stems are cheap & I relate it to changing the oil filter when changing oil. To answer your question, “But have you ever had one just up and fail?” The answer is no. In the 30 years of driving (excluding bicycles and such) I have had two flats related to the valve stem. One was a faulty valve core, and how that went bad? I’ll never know. The second was due to someone stepping on the valve stem when trying to reach for something in the bed of a truck.
I too live by the old saying, “If you want something done right, do it yourself”, and agree fully with your statement regarding sloppy jobs by employees who don’t take pride in their work. To answer your second question, “How many times have you taken something in for warranty work and had to take it back because it was done improperly?” Too many times. Like you, I prefer to do my own work. I also know my limitations and hate it when I’m forced to let someone else work on my stuff. I will always see imperfections and it drives me insane if I must return it a second time. The only comfort I get in this situation is now I know the business is making less money.
By the way, several of my friends jokingly refer to me as Mr. Anal. Sometimes, I don’t really think they know how correct the reference is.
I’ve seen your work on other threads, you’ve got talent. I also respect your opinions. My apologies if my ill attempt of humor offended you.

It was nice to see I was not the only one who received bad stems. Two others were their bitching. To add insult to injury they gave me a coupon for $5.00 to use at the food stand.

First (and most importantly), NO offense was taken.
Second: If wanting it done right means you are being anal, you've got lots of company. Like yourself, I get crazy when I have to get warranty work done, because I know I'll need to go over it to see what they did wrong and fix it.
I don't think it is a matter of being anal as much as it is frustration in not being able to count on the ther guy to do what he's getting paid for. Apparently among the boat companies, Intrepid does get it right on warranty and service. They are also the ones with a waiting list. Hmmmmmm. Is here a lesson here?

I just pulled the 30 year old valve stems out on my John Deere tonight and they were fine , it's the BIG hole in the rotten tire that spanked me .
Two new tires in the AM, OUCH and those are the rear water filled tires.

So, which smells worse? Catfish bait or the 30 year old water out of a tire?
