Need a Tax advisor in NC...
I know some of you NC guys on here have some decent Tax professionals at your disposal.
Long story short, I haven't filed a NC tax return for state taxes since 2005, the first year I reported in this state, since they always owed me pittance amounts like 12, 15, whatever dollars after I calculated it out. I have filed federally every year, and our broke ass state figured they could get me on fines for not filing, hence I have to file per the letter. Currently they are asking for only 2005 and 2006. I received a letter from NC today saying file for 05 and 06, I just wanna get it all done and file 07, 08 also so they can't rack up the penalties if their are any.
Lesson learned, always file state, I thought they'd be happy by holding onto the 15 dollar return by not filing, but oh no, they need the fees associated.
Don't get me started on my fair share of taxes, I'm single with no deductions doing a 1040EZ every year. My federal tax rate last year was a whopping 38 percent of gross All because I choose not to get married.
I should buy a shanty just so I can file longform and write off the interest. I can nail in a mailbox and claim it as primary.
Rant over, need someone to help me out with NC taxes. FW, Dawiggs, Offshore, anyone?

Yep, they like those fines and fees, they don't count as taxes, so they can claim they are keeping taxes low. I'll bet the worst part of this will be heat from Lisa--don't let your wife/SO get more evidence that you are a dumbass, file that paperwork!

Chris,
You need to try and find someone there in your area so you can sit down and work with them. Important to note that many times they will forgo the penalties if you dont owe anything. Matt or Dave might know someone in the area that can do the taxes and file the paperwork. Push for not paying the penalties it often works. I wish I knew someone in your area....Mark

Chris,
The state form is pretty easy if you file 1040ez for federal. I always do the kids every year. For the current year, you can do it online, print it and mail it in. Not sure about the previous years. Most all of the info for state comes straight off the 1040ez.

The tax man cometh.. No way around it my friend. File those returns for each year. You can do it yourself and if you wish get one of the local CPA firms ( who does Owens tax work?) to review and if in fact the amount of refund or tax owed is miminal, they could write a letter on their letterhead requesting relief from the penalities. On a side note, be somewhat thankful that you have a good job in todays world that pays you enough to have a tax liability......Tie a rope around your butt tonight and don't get blown off course....Tropics are getting busy..
Good Luck,
dw

Been busy working. I have been using Kerns Lowman as my CPA for the last 6 years or so. He's located in Kitty Hawk by the RBC Bank.
He's always been great with me and I know he does a lot of other real estate agents taxes.
Give him a call 252-255-1040 (I think) or lookup Burgess, Lowman & Associates

Chris, if your Federal return is that straightforward, you shouldn't have any trouble completing the NC returns. All the prior year forms are here (see the yellow box):
Individual Tax Forms and Publications
If you don't have copies saved of your previous years 1040EZ's you can request them here:
Need a Copy of Your Tax Return Information?
If I were you, to save some $ I would complete the returns myself and then take Dave's/Mark's advice and have a local CPA review your situation and provide you a cover letter, asking for a waiver of the fees, to submit with your returns. That will give you a little more leverage than filing them on your own
I just spent $250 in DMV fees and 6 weeks trying to get a trailer for my newly acquired 13' Whaler titled/registered so you don't have to tell me about dealing with local/state govt!! What a racket.

Matt, Josh, Alan, Dave....
Thanks for the help, especially Josh, saved me from many hours of searching the IRS.gov website, because I don't have those later federal returns saved here at the house. and I will take the advice and get Mr. Lowman to file them for me. Thanks fellas! You guys kick ass!
Also, good seeing you today Matt, what were you doing in your old 'hood?
