Default My trailer is so done....

Got a '99 loadrite double axle trailer with torsion axles. Had it for about 4 years. After letting it sit for most of last year, I knew the hubs and bearings were shot. Nice weekend, so I decided to rip it apart and order what I needed to replace hubs, bearings, brakes, some u-bolts where the nuts are mushroomed out.

First hub off, these are 1350# hubs and spindles I believe, 1"3/8 inner and 1"1/16 outer. So disgusted with this spindle that I don't want to even take off the others and check them.

From what I can tell, these type of torsion axles the spindle cannot be disassembled, you have to order a complete axle. Anyone know a way around this?

Overall view, rusty torsion axle, but the rust creeped on the inner spindle through the rear seal under the inner stainless sleeve.

Race up close:

Backing plate and spindle:

Back of torsion axle:

Close up of inner sleeve over spindle, the rust cracked it, hence why the trailer was clicking going down the road:

Bummed out if I gotta replace the axles, it would be easier just to replace the trailer.

Chris, I don't know how much all those parts are going to cost you, but it looks like a new trailer might need to be considered. Sometimes when they get to that point, it's more aggravation than it's worth. Good Luck

New axles front and rear are $600 a piece.

Hubs are 200$ for all four

Brakes are 400$ for a complete tie-down disc brake kit.

Need new tires also, they would be about 200$.

U-bolts, etc. looking at another couple hundred in misc parts that are falling apart.

Outside storage at Broad-Creek Marina (with in/out privileges) for a year is less than fixing the trailer. And I would definitely love the convenience and use the boat a whole lot more.

Problem is I have a Zuki under warranty, and I need a trailer to get it to the closest dealer.

Leaning towards keeping it in Wanchese.

All those repairs are still less than 1/2 the price of a new trailer.

Chris

I don't know if you can do it but rack storage is sweet. I've been using rack storage over the last 6 years. It real nice pulling up in the parking lot, waving to the lift op and knowing the boat is going to be in the water in 10 minutes.

You'd have to figure out something with getting my boat off the trailer but you could use my trailer if needed. Its in the PC lot near Big Al's.

Thanks Greg, I appreciate it.

I can drag the trailer down a few miles here to the KDH public ramp and launch it, to get it to Wanchese. 25 Mph the whole way.

Service is the issue, but BW28 has (2) Zuke DF250's on the back of his 2850 bluewater, and he hasn't had the first lick of problems in 750 hours. Mine has'nt given me a problem, and I'm sure the columbia dealer would be open to a trip charge if I needed something. I'm prolly gonna gamble and dry stack it in Wanchese so I can use it this season and fix the trailer at my leisure.

BTW, now that I know where you keep the grady and that sweet 300, if all of the sudden there's a couple hundred extra hours on the meter, don't be alarmed, I was just "flushing" the motor and keeping the batteries charged.

Kidding, I just KEED!
