Had an interesting time on Wednesday. An Infantry battalion that I served in for many years had a firepower display at a range North of Brisbane & I scored an invite.
The unit is getting ready for a deployment to Afghanistan & was trialling their weapon systems. Many members of the unit have already served in Iraq & Afghanistan.
105mm Dual-purpose howitzer being fired over open sights at a target some 900M away. The ragheads like to snipe at the occupants of forward defensive locations from a fair way out. They don't hit many people but a patrol has to go out after them or a gunship is called in. A 105 round with a proximity fuse will sort em out. Quicker, cheaper & a real surprise when the shrapnel starts flying.
A pair of Light Armoured Vehicles. The one on the right has a 25mm chain gun in the turret. If you look carefully at the lower pic, you will see two orange pinpoints above the sandy area. 25mm tracer.
What happens to a soft skin vehicle when it is hit by a Javelin anti-tank missile. The Taliban like to get around in this type of van.
My ride. Bushmaster armoured vehicle. Designed to survive roadside bombs. Carries two machine guns on the pintle mounts. Shields are not in place.
There was plenty of other stuff happening but my digital camera does not have a real big lens so the pics are not good.
