Default How do websites "work"? Looking to make (or have made) a simple site for a Store...

My dad co-owns a men's clothing store, one location, very low tech. They have sold a few things using an ebay-based "web-store" and found it's almost completely worthless (most of their stuff is unfinished and has to be tailored, so selling online is limited to some shirts and sweaters.)

BUT, the area is growing and it seems like having a simple website with their address, phone number, some pictures, and what they offer would go a long way if it could somehow make it into people's google searches for things like "Suffolk Tuxedo Rental" or "Suffolk men's clothing"...

So, how does one go about doing that? (Where do you 'get' a web address, who can make a simple site like that, etc)

Thanks,

Google up some of the free one's ... then go from there to get your bearings.

Ok, I've read...now a few more specific questions: Is there a right or wrong way, or place, to register a domain name? Can someone explain what exactly that process is accomplishing? Who am I paying, and what are they doing for me?

Secondly, is there a good or bad "free" website creator? A site that literally has nothing other than a picture, a list of brands they sell and services they offer and a google maps link to their address would be 100% better than nothing (which is what the store currently has).

Anything else relevant, feel free to tell me...

Ryan,

It's actually pretty easy and to me it's fun.. Here's what I would suggest.

1. Register a Domain Through GoDaddy
2. If you are looking for a small minimal website just buy their basic hosting package - can't remember the cost.

That's it, I know if a lot of real estate agents who use the yahoo website creator, I use something different but it's not free.

Main thing you have to make sure is that you add keywords to your Meta Tags section! That is what the search engines read and see. So it is very important.

Typically it will take a little time to get up on search engines, and it depends upon how much competition you have.
