Default Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.....

What the HELL is going thru the minds of the powers that be in NC? (this is from Gofishsc.com) : << "While visiting the Cape Hatteras National Recreational Seashore today, I am unable to go to the places that I have fished for most of my life. An injunction has been filed to close the most popular fishing areas:

all of Oregon Inlet,
all of Cape Point,
all of South Beach,
all of Hatteras Inlet,
all of North Ocracoke and
all of Ocracoke Inlet.

These areas would be closed to all beach driving all year long until a new protected species plan is approved which would mean that these year around closures could last as long as 3 years or more.

If you ever fished Cape Hatteras or thought about it, you need to get involved for those who are fighting to keep open access at Hatteras.
Everyone need to think about and discuss openly what what a closure means to you. It may not be your back yard at the moment, but this issue will affect you in the future as others want to take away our access.">> Just when I was beginning to plan a surf fishing trip for the fall....(scared to death to try to pull my 25' SeaRay with my 3500 GMC 4X4 and a small older slide-in camper on it (weighs about 800lbs)into NC because I'll be in the gunsights of every trooper) now this. It is just getting to be too big of a hassel (and risk). I love the banks and have been going since the sixties but after the trailer fiasco then there is the drivers lic. requirements (upgrade?). So I was leaving the boat, putting on the floatation tires, and just taking the truck/camper. So exactly what is open and what is closed? Can you still drive out on hatteras to fish/camp or is that closed?

Rumrunner, There is a website that will give you all the info that you need plus ways to be involved and other sites that are helping fight this. www.island free press.com. Anyone interested in "fighting" for free and open access should definitely go here. "Stand in the Sand" jamnstv

Exclamation Web address for "island free press"

The web address for island free press is Island Free Press - Hatteras and Ocracoke Island online newspaper --A lot of good info there. Cut and paste to your browser if needed. I'll be driving up shortly for a first hand look to satisfy myself -except I'll be driving a small SUV that I assume is still legal (at least on the paved roads...). Cheers - Rumrunner
