I'm sure many of you already know about the legislation that is going on with this right now, but the court date is soon approaching (4/4/08) and I thought it would be a good time to try and generate some more support. As I understand, a lot of this has to do with bird populations...but everytime I've driven on the beach, they have certain "off limits" areas where these birds nest.
I had a long talk with the owner of Tradewinds Tackle in Ocracoke a couple weeks ago and he is obviously upset about all of this. Especially in Ocracoke, beach access can be somewhat difficult if you can't drive onto the beach. Well as an example, how much is this going to hurt not only his business, but many others?
I've grown up coming to the outer banks and this is one of the qualities we have here that makes it so special. The owner of this shop went on to explain that a lot of this money to stop access is coming out west (Californina, Nevada, Utah, etc) where driving in the desert (still 4x4 area...same category) is far more detrimental. We have storms and tides to erase our tracks while they do not. According to him, many out west are oblivious to our unique situation and don't quite understand. You can show your support for this issue below and even write your senator or congressman a short note about how you oppose this. The tradewinds site has the addresses to senators/congressman while the other link has a different way of showing support via the internet. Sorry for the rant but I hope yall will help out if you haven't already. It only takes a second. Thanks.
