I know I'm not in Alaska, but since we are only 26 miles from the panhandle, I'll post some updates from Prince Rupert, BC.
The season here is definitely over right now, with no winter fishery to speak of. There are a few hard core guys out trolling up some 'feeder' springs (Kings salmon), but with temperatures below freezing, it's not too tempting right now.
Our halibut season was great this year. Lots of fish in the 50's and up with the largest topping out at 220 lbs. I have to plug Boston Whaler here, that fish fit in one of the two lockers on the boat - we had to take the hydraulic arm off and step on the door, but it fit! Getting it out was 'fun'.
Our salmon season started off with a huge bang with lots of coho and springs showing early (June). We had a bit of a lull after that, just enough for everyone to start wondering, then they came through in force. Most of our springs are in the 20 -40 pound range, with a few 40-50's in the boat this year. Pretty solid year for fish.
Ground fish, like Red Snapper (or Yellow Eye) and Ling Cod were very consistent. We had a number of bucketheads in the boat over 60 lbs. If you have never seen them, ling cod are pretty menacing looking fish, lots of teeth and very predatory.
That's about it for now. I'll post more as the season approaches, and give everyone some updates on the Northcoast.
