Just curious. Some of you know I'll be soon buying a 24-26 cc. My truck currently has a "regular" plate on it. It's basically a heavy duty 1500. I'll probally be towing 7-9000 with the new boat. What kind of plate will I need to upgrade to? My renewal comes up next month. Buying the boat come march. Thx guys

David , what kind of towing are you going to do ? One or two miles to the ramp or 100 plus mile trips . 1 or 2 miles to the ramp , pull it .
Long trips , well , for me you don't have enough truck.

The only way to know for sure what your pulling is to weigh it wet [ boat, motor, trailer ready to drop in and go fishing ] If you rig weighs 9k , Good luck.

Can you find a rig like you want to buy and try pulling and STOPPING it.

Lester

I'm not bashing you , just giving you things to think about.

From what I have gathered from all the posts on different sites in NC all regular pickup trucks are considered "Self-Propelled property-carrying vehicles" and are all subject to needing a weighted tag if you exceed the 9000lb combined weight. Here is the attached document I received from someone on FPT...Hope this helps

The welder,
Yeah, I'm pretty sure my truck will stop this boat I'm looking at. Boat weighs 3000 dry. It has disc brakes. I have the 6.0 gas, 410 gears, tranny cooler, and couple other things. I've hauled bigger loads than that and done fine. What kind of plate would I need? 7-9000 is the # of the trailer I came up with because it's going to come down between two boats. Already have class a's due to my job, so that I don't have to worry about

Take your loaded boat and trailer and loaded truck to a truck stop scales and have the entire package weighted. Take the total and pad it by a 1000 lbs and that will be what you need to buy in capacity. Here is what your weight ticket will look like:

This is why I am licensed for 17k. BTW, I was not pulling my boat on this load. I was towing a trail rig and hauling my slide in camper.

David it is the combined weight of the truck and the boat-trailer combination. If your truck weighs 6000lbs and the (Ready to fish weight of the trailer boat combination) weighs 7000lbs you are at 15,000lbs so you would need at a minimum 15000lb tag.....Mark

Yes, your insurance will cover it. Just like it covers you if you have an accident while driving drunk.

They may raise your rates or refuse to renew your policy in the future but they will cover the incident.

BTW, minor point, the NCSHP are not usually the ones stopping people for DMV violations They don't carry scales. It is the Motor Carrier Enforcement division of the NC Dept of Crime Control and Public Safety.

The MCE guys used to drive the blue cars, now they drive cars that are painted like SHP. BTW, the MCE guys can shoot you and write speeding tickets.

Still no reply to my letter from the AGs office. I get the feeling there is quite a bit of heat on the AG and the HP because of the targetting of a few tournament boats at the beginning of the month. I dont expect a answer anytime soon to the questios at hand. Seems to be a uproar about recreational boaters being targeted. I really think everyone should express their concerns about the matter.
