Chris, just to clarify is it 8 foot 6 inches (102 inches) or 9 foot (108 inches)? An why on earth is this so darn complicated? I just wanna go fishing!

Yep, anything over 102 is considered a wide load in NC.

Jason (Tiler)

Anyone with an out of state tag towing into NC will be governed, weight wise, by the issuing state, but your overwidth limits would be governed by NC.

That was Blue Magics saving grace when the trooper followed him from Columbia to Manns Harbor this fall.

This topic was discussed here also: http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60 and a lawyer was consulted to get answers to the questions on weight. The width issue is a whole different ball of wax though. SUVs and motorhomes (both exempt)should have to pay the same thing I do.
That was a good Thread but they are having the same problem everyone is !! NO CONSISTANCY IN THE AGENCIES ENFORCING THE LAWS PERIOD!!!! What it comes down to if you get a ticket you go to court and the judge will decide for you!!! I think I will go up the weight on my tag just to be safe....Mark

Hey Guys. A friend of mine owns the tag agency here in Asheville. He called Raliegh for me and was told that nothing has changed. Personal boats are still exempt for weight. I told him about the officers giving out tickets in MHC and he said it would not hold up in court.

While this is discussing trailers, I just found something else out. (may not apply to boat trailers...I don't know) The NCHP has a white van (at least in Pitt Cnty) that uses an infered thermometer to shoot the temperature of your trailer hubs to see if your brakes are operating. If you have a trailer equiped with brakes and they are not hooked up or operating then you get fined. I also heard they make you park it where ever you are until they get fixed (I find that hard to believe). I have seen the van at intersections on 264 w/ patrol cars around it but didn't know what it was for...until today!

From past expierence on my last trip, I think they don't give a crap about out of state people, except the wide load permit, flags, and wide load signs. I think they are just looking more for the weighted vehicle.
I had a state trooper follow me for about 30 miles on hwy 64 from Columbia to Manns Harbor. He stayed behind me even when I got to the 4 lane section, I slowed down to 30 mph because of the dips in the road and he was still behind. He must have been checking me out all of that time and reliazed that I did have a wide load permit and that I was from out of state and we don't have weighted vehicles. He finally passed me on Mann Harbor bridge.
He could of pulled me over for not displaying the signs and flags but he was a very nice police officer.
I always trailer without the flags and sings to try to draw less attention.
So far I have been really lucky......
