Default Jeb's first deer!

Jeb got his first deer this afternoon. We have really been putting the time in practicing his shooting and spending some time on the stands. When you are 6 the shot has to be just right and he has had to sit through some deer too close and some too far but this time the big doe was just right. I don't know who was more excited...me or him! Definitely worth all the effort we have put into it.

Very cool...I was trying to figure out what round would be sensible enough in the recoil department, yet pack enough punch to knock down a deer. In VA the .223 is technically illegal for deer hunting, but folks use it anyway without much trouble.

The .223 is more than enough and perfect for young shooters. It has no recoil. Make sure you get a load or load with a bullet designed for penetration. Nosler 60gr Partition or Barnes 53gr TSX (what I use). The frangible bullets will work but these two bullets are much better at getting the job done. My daughter who is 12 uses the same gun in 243 but it has too much recoil for the little fella....he will switch to it when he is 9 or 10.

If you look at the photo I mounted the scope about 1.5" forward so he could choke up on the stock.
