Opening day dog hunt 10/18
Went to the club friday hungry for some action in the woods after a long offseason, and saturday's hunt provided just that. Turned the dogs out at 7:30, and an hour into the hunt I hear footsteps...seconds later and a good looking, but young 9 pointer walks out no further than 10 yds from me. I decided to let it walk.
5 minutes later, I hear shots and my buddy a mile away has shot the same deer! OH well. After helping him, a couple of us were standing around the truck getting ready to pick up when we hear the dogs making one last pass. Wanting some meat we decided we were gonna tag team and shoot whatever crosses the gas line...A minute later and a young 10 pointer is streaking across.
Well the three of us put it to him with 8 shots thinking he's done. Not so fast! The deer is down but somehow still very fiesty. 10 dogs have caught up and are eager to help in our cause as well. The deer kicked several dogs as my two buddies (accompanied with a knife) literally wrestle this deer to the ground in a fashion that resembles a scene from Steve Irwins crocodile hunts. Because it was a two-man job, I was left to the side rolling on the ground in laughter at what I just witnessed. Anyways, it was all over shortly later and we prepared for the afternoon still hunt. Not quite like the morning but did manage to see a couple does and a small 6 pointer. What a great opening day.
