Default 'Squid Jigs'

Has anyone tried catching squid with squid jigs in the Gulf ... south of Venice?
It's done on the east & west coasts with success ... just wondering.

I have tried while swording with no success yet not sure if I am doing it right though. I have dipnetted a few squid at night and found a half of a squid floating by medusa that would have weighed an easy 40 pounds if it were whole.

Eddie , off the side rod holder mount your 500 watt squid light[ this is done at night ] have your squid jig ready.

When squid appear lower your jig 5' or 6' into the water , when the squid nail your jig lift in a slow steady motion stright to the bait tank and lower the critter in .

It's that easy.

Oh yea, watch out for flying fish , they like the light too.

Red,

I have done it with success in the deeper water reaches of Green Canyon. Actually sight casting to them with the grapple jigs was very productive. Used flouro leader. Don't know if it helped or not, but I conviced myself that it was better......

Hey Al

I was thinking about dropping some down deep in the daytime when making a swordfish drift. I made up a few from 6 oz trolling sinkers coated with epoxy & Glo-Powder ... Glo-Tubing & Glo-beads. They stay luminous in a dark room for 2 hrs +. May try a few as a Sabiki Rig with your fluoro suggestion.

Thanks
Red

BTW .. It's hard to pick one of these up without it grabbing you ... think i'll pinch the barbs.

Default yes . . .

Red, they used to jig them up at night off the Florida panhandle.

I work with some Capt's from Southern, CA that fish for squid and I will call and get some of their tactics.

I remember the CA guys talking about the humboldt squids, which are huge, being cut into strips and used for trolling bait. Said it was KILLER for dolphin!

See if I can get some more info!

Holy cow! I would deffinitely pinch down those barbs. That thing looks deadly. I've jigged up tons of them when I lived on Marthas Vineyard. It's a little plastic jig with barbless hooks. When they are around it's real easy to catch a mess of them. Like it was explained before, just drop it down and when they grab it lift them out nice and steady. Watch out for the squirted ink. Also, they will bite. Won't break the skin but it might freak you out the first time.

Thanks Rob

They say; the humboldts have migrated up to WA now. Maybe they've come up in the gulf and that's what Eddie found at Medusa. I was looking at some squid sites for jig designs and saw a few articles on them.
