Default Swivel Base Rod Holders

Hi guys and gals, I've got a question. Do any of you have swivel base rod holders on your boats? I've been digging around and I'm not sure what is the right one for my use. I plan on using a bent butt stand up rod in it. Hoping to reel in a deep dropped swordy with it. Once we get it close we'll switch over to using the harness but for most of the fight it will be the boat and rod holder doing the heavy lifting. They come in 90 degree, 15 degree and 30 degree. They also come in different lengths. Any recommendations?

How much do you intend to rotate the rod Fred? As you rotate in a 30° holder the rod tip rises ... rotate it about 90° and it's almost straight up. If you use a 0° holder the tip will be up at at a 53° angle but it will stay at that angle if you rotate it 360°. If a fish sounds with the rod up at a 53° angle ... it will break. This is just rule of thumb ... put your rod in a regular holder and rotate it and you'll be able to see how the angle changes. Boomer just installed two 30°'s for swordfishing and we found out the hard way. Check into it carefully.

Ahhh, got it. So the 90 degree version would work if the fish was well away from the boat and somewhat close to the surface. But if it's straight down the rod will point too high. I just held the bent butt as it would sit in a 90 degree and I see what you are saying. I'll have to take some measurements to see what might work. Did the 30 degree work for a bent butt? I'm wondering if I mounted a 30 so it faced somewhat outboard?

Thanks for the tip. Requires more head scratching.

I have two 30degrees on my boat. They are used for planer rods. they work great and relieve some of the pressure in turns or if the boat rocks while trolling Mark

Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for a good deal on a couple 30 degree. Do you guys use the regular length or the longs?

I have the regular length lee 30* swivels......Mark

I would not go with the longs unless you have long butts on your rods. If you go with the longs and have regular butts you will need a gimbal adapter to go into the rod holder....

Consumer Marine has always had the best price on new here is a link.
They also have the backing plates.
