Default OBX Sound Stripers --any info???

I am heading down to Pirate's Cove for the week after Christmas. Has anyone heard of any striper activity at Mann's Harbor? Trolling or eels? I just cannot take the risk of having my six year old out on the shoals of OI (just the two of us), so we usually just fish the Mann's Harbor Bridge area. I have not heard any reports lately since many of the boats are up at Rudee Inlet.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Law Dog,

I've been fishing the sound for the past few months, trolling and eels.

I wouldn't advise targeting there, there are too many gill net's in the sound right now.

The good news is, if it's clear and low seas, the stripers are here, and should be around near the inlet. I'd start trolling in 35 to 75 feet of water up and down the beach, with parachutes and umbrella rigs. It's about time for the blues and stripers to start showing up.

Second option would be to tie up to the OI bridge and work the pilings with live eels and live pinfish on a hook. That should produce as well.

And for the end-all-be-all, the weather is too rough, and I don't want to drive out on the beach scenario, go buy some small eels, then cast them underneath the charter boats in their slips at OIFC, and I'll guarantee you'll catch a rock or two for your boy.

But seriously, if the bar is nice, try some trolling around. The bluefish should be around here shortly, which will keep you busy. Don't forget to pack the metal spoons!

Thanks Gene...My report was based on earlier this month...I don't follow the commercial schedules like I should.

BTW, I will never jump on any commercial fisherman on here, everyone is entitled to make a living, and the commercial guys have one of the hardest, ever, jobs to try and make a living at. I like the thought of having commercial guys on the fishing boards, keeps us well rounded, and maybe we could learn a thing or two from them.

Merry Xmas

Speculative economic times right now affect our area and incomes greatly, so I'm pinching every penny right now, just in case.

My profession, in this area, is driven by excessive cash flow from tourism, and I'd really like to think that the economy is ok for the mid-upper class for the next few years, I'm still waiting to see.

Ended up fishing at Manns Harbor for awhile on the 27th and 28th . . . nothing at all on eels. About 2/3s of the boats were trolling. Not a bite and did not see a single fish caught and did not talk to anyone that got a bite (talked to five or six boats both afternoons). We did not have a north wind either day. In fact, on the 28th, there was no wind and no current . . . useless to fish but my son and I had a real good time hanging out together. My six year old did "catch" a really big cluster of oysters that he battled . . . I had the net ready and then realized that the "fish" was not moving. He was quite disappointed.

Went to TW's yesterday and their fishing board said good catches of small rock at Mann's Harbor????
