"offshore angler" tackle catalog
Guys, I thought I knew quite a bit about trolling offshore until I went out with Alan(headhunt) this summer. My wife is looking through this catalog, trying to pick out some lures for xmas presents to me I'm not sure what to tell her. I have loads of illanders. Has anyone ever tried these "wahoo whackers that come prerigged ready to fish as is? Or a rattle jet? Basically, those lures that you see them fishing a lot off hawaii. It's just the skirt, head, and hook, with a long leader. No ballyhoo in the skirt. Anyway, this catalog has kits that they sell. anyone familiar with this catalog, point out some good stuff. Thx

I do not care for it at all as they do not support this forum like other businesses have and will continue to do in a larger role in the future.

Yes I did, and I am very pleased. We should make a list of items we buy every year and give it to Jeff. For starters, I buy 100 yard spools of Seaugar floro in 80 lb. about twice a year.

But to answer your question. The lures you have are the best for NC. Islander Ballyhoo combos cant be beat. I also like Seawitches and ballyhoo. You can spend a ton of money of stuff that does not work I know I have done it. Maybe concentrate on the Terminal end. Hooks crimpers sleeves leader Etc. Click Below on the link. These are the items I have narrowed it down to over the years.Simple but everything I need for rigging for trolling is in the two boxes. Keep it as simple as you can. ... Mark

Dave,
I would concentrate on Islanders, Sea Witches and get you some squid so you can make some spreader bars. Almost every boat that tuna fishes off of the NC coast is pulling at least one bar.
Over the past week I made all new rigs ready to go when the seas lay down. I made an assortment of witches in different colors (pink, blue/white and purple/black), Islanders and Juniors (pink/white and blue/white), spreader bars (blue/white with a green machine stinger) and chains. I made my chains from pink witches and black/purple witches. I have caught alot of tuna on that rig.
I hope to head down next week. Thursday-Saturday has a little promise. What's your schedule like?

I forgot to mention two rigs I always have ready. Natural cedar plugs and nakeds. I have personally caught most of my tuna on witches, chains of witches, cedar plugs and nakeds. Keep a planer rig ready as well. Alot of fish this fall have only been caught on the planer. I'd keep it simple. If you ever get on the tuna when they are feeding, you will get hit.

Thx Alan, Mark. You know how most of the wives are. They want to do all the ordering and wrapping of your gifts. I've already told her to wrap the TLD 25's I have coming in, but that won't work. As such, she wants a catalog she can order stuff out of. I already have my downrigger, and two reels. Have a ton of illanders, few sea witches, and cedars. I've always been fascinated by the hooked skirts trolling by their self catching fish. Too many fishing shows I guess. I'm just going to have to learn about crimps, sleeves, chin weights, and etc. BTW, I need some help on what rods to buy that are affordable and wheher to rig them with braid or mono.
Alan. If I can get away at all, it would probally be sat. Dec is a tough month for me because of the xmas rush with the post office. Pretty soon, I'll be logging 500 mile, 12 hr days. Big paychecks, just not a lotta time. Just let me know, by wed or thurs, and I'll see what I can do. Maybe I can twist his arm a little and get down there for a day.I sure do want to go!

I think the easiest thing to do is pick out a spreader bar and some daisy chains. I agree with others that there's always at least one or the other in my spread (if not both). They're pricey out of the catalogs (and I prefer to make my own) but if she insists you pick something, they won't go unused, that's for sure!
