Default Oregon Inlet fishing after Earl

I abandoned my plans to dove hunt this weekend due to the forecast and ended up heading to the beach Sunday after watching the NC State football game in Raleigh.

There has been a great white marlin bite this time of year for a couple years now, but I haven't been able to participate in it until yesterday. Ran the Regulator North about as far as we wanted to go which put us in deep water at the 150 line. I didn't particularly like the spot, but a bunch of fish were caught at these numbers the day before and a few fish were released early before we got there. Fished for over an hour with only a couple of dolphin to show for it.

Picked up along with a couple of other boats and ran another 15 miles NE to where the bite was located. This put us 76 miles from the seabuoy at the 300 line in over a 1000 fathoms! The farthest I've been from Oregon Inlet in awhile. Got there and it was a parking lot with boats backing down everywhere...tons of boats hooking multiple fish at a time.

Knowing we don't have two triple tier dredges and some other goodies, we waited patiently for our turn at some dumber fish. Had a couple window shoppers but no love. Shortly later we're hooked up to our first fish. Catch him and reset only to hook another single 10 minutes later. Release this fish as well. Hit a dry spell watching 30-40 cutters on bait but couldn't get a bite. Early afternoon we had two fish in the spread and hooked both. Just as we're clearing lines a couple minutes later, hook pulls on first fish. Get lines cleared and move to bow only to pull the hook on the second fish...shit!

Finally get another bite and catch this fish to make it 3 for the day. Picked up just after 2 to begin the 75+ mile journey back. Luckily we were able to make 30 kts. Had a great time catching these fish and had just as much fun watching other boats catch em. Some ballpark numbers for the day-

Full Choke- 3
Biopsea- 42 on Saturday/ 8 on sunday (Overnighter)
Pelican- 26
Obsession- 24
Trophy Hunter -23
Hunter- 12
Hog Wild - 8

Nice Alex!!! Long run home. I saw lots of flags flying on the boat reports. What was the closest mark or canyon where you fished? I heard they were killing them off the Wilmington Canyon out of VB early last week..Mark

A few boats messed them up pretty good at the 790/150 on Sunday so we started there. A lot of boats continued heading north. I wanted to head north but we figured we would wait it out and see if it was worth doing the extra miles considering the boat we were in. Well the bite ended up going off at the 736/300 line but the guys kept quiet about it on the radio for awhile.

We made it there and caught a few then called it a day....Wish we could have had a few more.

Great report and the fishing looks like it was worth the run.

Dave,
Not sure about exact fuel numbers but I'd say somewhere in the ballpark of 200 or just shy of it. We've been burning between 115-130 on runs to the 000s.

We got some great pictures that I'll post up soon!
