Birthday Blue Suit- OI Memorial Day
5/28-Fished my buddy's (Full Choke) Regulator on Friday looking for the gaffers south out of Oregon Inlet. It was a little choppy on the way out, but when we arrived to our spot we found that we were all alone- a rare thing this time of year, especially Memorial Day weekend.
The morning started off very slow with only a couple bites from bailers and the gaffers eluding us. Ended up getting into the tunas pretty good starting at around 9. Caught 11 and kept our limit of 9 before working up the beach. Around noon the billfish bite started going off at around the 400 line and we were right in the thick of it. Only 10 boats fishing this area and I think every boat had at least one encounter with a billfish. An hour into it we had caught a couple gaffers when I see the short rigger get plowed out of the corner of my eye...hooked up blue marlin. 15 seconds later the 350 class fish jumped off. An hour later we got another shot off a blind bite. This fish stayed deep and never jumped. 30 Minutes later a #225 class fish is boatside and released healthy. The action for everyone in the area was pretty good.
At one point 3 boats were all lined up backing down on blue ones...one captain said "you know its a good bite when everyone is tripping up on each other because they're fighting blue ones!" And he was right....
Finished the day keeping 9 yfts, 5 gaffers, 1-2 on blues.
5/30 Fished with Michael, Mark (offshore), my brother and a couple others on the Tuna Teaser. Had the pleasure of having Elson Myers on the bridge....class act guy and really enjoyed fishing with him. Cleared the marina and had fuel issues. Turned around and got everything resolved just over an hour later. Our late start probably didn't help, but we managed to stop right on top of some fish. Ended up catching 5 tunas and 9 gaffers. No luck on the billfish today and broke a couple tunas off on light leader, but overall a nice day.
5/31 Spent a couple of hours just south of the inlet catching a bunch of spanish, blues, and albacore. No luck with the cobes.
Depsite the rough weather saturday, it was a good long weekend!
