Deep Drop Fishing
I am very interested in any info members can pass on to me regarding deep water fishing with Electric Reels. It is only a fledgling method of fishing here in OZ,and we have had some very good reports of fish captures. It seems to be a huge sport in Japan and the Us,and any info as far as terminal tackle, what sort of reels and rods are the most popular would be of great help.Ozzy

I have done some deep dropping but no expert here. I have done it with other people's equipment. One important thing to do , when you set up your rig or equipment make sure you use a cork ball on top of your main swivel so when your reeling up the swivel does'nt hit the eye on the rod and brake it off. It's not cheap to get set up. Rod and reel combos can cost anywhere between $1,200 to $5,000. The guys I fish with use a 5 to 10 hook rig. The amount of lead depends on the current and depth so if your fishing in 400 to 700 ft plan on using at least 24 ounces of lead.
Here is a guide to deep dropping Enter A New World* Of Fishing Ad
You can pick up the gear at places like Melton's, Finest Kind fishing tackle or any other internet site. There's a bunch of them out there.

Deep dropping we would use 1 pound of weight for every 100 feet [ ex. 800' = 8 pounds ]
we would use #18 rebar for weight , it weighs 1 pound a inch and the weight is clipped on the bottom of the rig to keep everything tight.
Also when reeling up use a smooth steady retrieve so the fish don't spin off. They also will start floating at the 200' to 300' mark so watch your line , it will go slack.
Of course back then we used 80lb Dacron line as it doesn't stretch and you can feel every hit . with a 5 hook rig we would wait for about 8 or10 good thumps then start reeling, don't jerk the rod , just start reeling.
Also, that deep , watch your drift to get everyone on the same side of the boat or it's tangle city BIG time.
We had the best luck letting the weight bounce the bottom using the swells for the jigging motion.
Just remember , that deep, don't jerk the rod around .

That's The Sort
of info I need to know, all about the weight factor per depth, and the cork stopper is something I wouldn't have thought about until I'd broke the first rod tip.
So basically you just leave your rods in the holder and let the reel do the work.
Over on the West Coast of OZ I fish to about 280ft with normal gear, but it's a pain in the A** checking baits.
We are plagued with sharks over there so we have to get them on board ASAP,and pumping up from that depth leaves its mark when your pushing the big 60.
Cheers Ozzy

Forgot to tell ya , when deep dropping we had a clamp on plastic coated RAIL PLATE , it bolted on just in front of the reel so it could REST on the rail , it also kept the rod from torquing over while reeling up.

I have used chunks of Squid, mackerel, marking tape [ Yes, Marking/Flagging tape] , baby Cod with out knowing it [ BIG eats small ] but I haven't used the flies.
Down that deep it seems anything that shows up down there gets eaten.

I Imagine the two speed allows you to bring your baits up extra fast and still gives you the power to bring up the Big Fish
