Default Poll: Heavy duty reels

What's the preferred off-shore choice? Not talking about light tackle - I mean the heavy duty - beefy nuts and bolts kinda reel that's gonna take a beating before it gets cleaned. 50's, 80's and 130's.

Mark is right ...they are probably the best on the market but pricey. Shimano would be my choice and not as pricey. I had my Shimanos for 10 years now and they are still in great shape. The Penns that I have are 3 years old and 2 of them already had to be repaired and another one on the way to the shop.

Reason I ask is I'm replacing my 7.5/0 and 9/0 Everols that have been re-built five times in 30+ years.

I haven't touched my Alutecnos since I bought them. This winter I am going to put new drag washers in them because Alutecnos has started using grease on there drag washers. I am curious to see how they look. They still feel and work like new after three years of offshore fishing...Mark

As a side note. The dealers that deal with Alutecnos will work with you on the price depending on how many reels you order. Give TackleDirect a call for pricing I got a killer deal when I ordered six 30s all at the same time.............

I love our shimano 80's but haven't spent a lot of time with the new penns either. I don't think you can go wrong with penn, shimano, or alutecnos

End all drag out most beefy reel for the money... Gotta go with the Shimano 50WLRS. 80 Size in a 50 weight reel. If you load that with JB spectra 130 and use the loop to loop system like Offshore does, you won't by another reel for the next 10 years. And you will be able to catch whatever you can catch on a rod and reel.

Those Alutecnos are really sweet tho, they just ooze quality.

My paycheck is too small to participate in this conversation. I do have 5 different sizes of Penn Senator that have worked well for me though.

I started with a Senator 117 with cuttyhunk line about 40 years ago fishing for BF Tuna off Nova Scotia and PEI. I still have that reel and use for deep dropping.
