Question Wire and Jigs

I've got a question. How do you folks that do a lot of jigging rig a wire leader to prevent biteoffs? Does it seem to effect the jigs action or effectiveness?

I plan on doing a bunch more jigging next year and off of Hatteras we've got lots of toothy critters.

Thanks.

Ken

Ken, all I use is a simple wire or cable leader that already has the swivel on one end the snap on the other. I'll use either a 12" or 18" leader on a butterfly because I kept getting bit off as well. Worked okay so far

We do not use wire and do loose our share of jigs. Thankfully I get them at wholesale . I typically use 50 to 80 lb fluorocarbon leader being 5' to 6' feet in length.

A question.... do you guys use jigs larger then 9oz.? We are thinking of picking up some larger sizes. Let me know please, thanks. Details @ http://www.anglersystems.com/butterflyjigs.html

Here's another question. So far, I've only used shimano butterfly jigs with pretty good sucess. How do the willamson butterfly jigs compare?

Thanks Dave and Jeff. Dave, I've done so little jigging I can't really comment on one versus the other. I have tried both and have caught fish on both. The finish on the Williamson's doesn't seem as tough as the Shimanos but that's all I can tell so far. Regarding the cable, I try rigging up a few with some cable and see how they seem to fish. I lost one of my big Shimano's to teeth last year and that's a bummer. Those babies ain't cheap!

Jeff, 9 oz's is the max I've tried so I'm not sure about heavier ones.

we were grouper fishing back in july with butterflys and they worked really well. I wasn't using wire that day so I ended up losing a couple of them. $40 down the tube. I'll say this though. The butterfly jigs were outperforming Squid on a bottom rig. We caught 3 grouper on squid, and about 12 on jigs.

Dave, they catch fish plenty well at half the cost. Williamson makes a couple of glow in the dark jigs, I like to fish at night in the summer when it's not as hot.

When you go thru about 20 or more jigs per trip.......buy the cheap ones..........there as good or better then Shimano.
When you by the cheaper jigs, just make sure you put good hooks on them, especially Diamond jigs
Rigging....use 90lb cable and crimp to the jig and a crimp to a swivel

All we use are Williamson and had no problems with the pre-rigged hooks they come with. IMO they are a solid product for the money.
