Default jigging

This probably sounds stupid to some of yall but I'm pretty new to the jigging scene and had a quick question-

What's the easiest way to figure out how deep you've just dropped your jig? Can't you count off depending on what weight jig your using? If so could someone provide an example? Thanks.

Alex, I wondered the same thing, so I went out to my pool this past weekend and droped 2 3.5oz, 5 oz & 7oz Shimano jigs. The all sank to the bottom in 2-1/2 seconds - 10' of water. I think I am safe to estimate 5'/second.

Another note... you would not believe how much those jigs darted like a fleeing fish as the dropped. I was impressed.

A Capt. friend told me to just raise the rod tip from water line to about 10 feet, hold the spool at top with your thumb, lift your thumb off the spool at the water level on the drop & count the number of times you do it..........80ft = approx. 8 lifts...........

Or get Diawa PE line that's color coded every 30 feet.........
Hope this help......ICM

I am not sure counting will be useful.........Current & depth will also come into play.......
Different styles of jigs - some that flutter & others just drop - will get to the bottom at different speed or times......
Hope this helps..........ICM

You will need a heavy jig in the stream to get the jig down fast enough. I believe most are using 12-15oz jigs. As soon as you drop your jig count one thousand one,one thousand two, one thousand three and stop. Then measure how deep your jig went you can use the rod to measure the amount of line you dropped. ( most rods have the length written on them) Now you have a standard to go by. If your jig dropped 50ft on the three count then of course a six count would be 100ft. The trick is for the captain to keep you on the marks and the more jigs in the water the better....Mark

Daiwa makes a line taht is counted off by meters. It is a braded line with colors that are indicated in different distances. Try this link
