Steeples 5/22
Ran out to the Steeples on the 36' Grady "Theseus" again today, WBFish was aboard also. Lines in around 0800, good weeds, good temp, flyers, nothing happened and it was 11, started looking down below for bananas when ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, ZZZZZZZ, ZZZ, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! 4 mahi on, after a little fighting, 3 on ice. Continued to troll around in around 200ft of water N of the Steeples, ended up with 8 mahi on ice, lost probably 4, and had a few I could not quite get to hookup on the drop back. Trolled inshore a bit to look for grouper bottoms, BOUNCE goes the planer, bam goes the 25-30lb wahooooooooooo in the box. Caught what I think to be silver snappers and some nice sea basses, headed in, got to the dock at 7 I think? Going to bed now, have to get up a 0530 for another charter. I really hate all this fishing!!!
Pics to follow tomorrow when I get them!!!
Oh yeah, 76 degrees, scattered weeds, the quadruple hit came from passing a log, pulling b/w and crystal seawitches w/ ballyhoos, a r/b small islander on the planer, a naked hoo or two, b/w and crystal CH Lures chuggers. Crystal CH was the ticket, I think 5 fish hit it, bally on or not, didnt matter, followed by the crystal witch, the b/w chugger, then the naked. And I just remembered that something cut off my 2 Boone birds and R/B Billy Baits jet head on the WWB.
5/23 WB Spanish and Cobia
Hooking up my boat to the Tahoe this morning, found TWO flat times, scrounged around looking for a 3Ton floor jack at 0600 (not easy) got the tires fixed, luckily I had two spares in the back yard. Met the group at the ramp, and we took off to catch some spaniards. Lines in at the north jetty, 3 clark spoons, my secret spanish lure, and a big yozuri deep diver type lure, cigar minner pattern on the WWB 6/0 that I brought on accident. Picked up a couple spanish, Capt. Wirt calls me to inform me there are some spanish biting where he is, start trolling up the beack that way, pick up a couple more spanish, then the 6/0 sounds like a spanish hits, then starts burrrrrrrrrning. Probably a 200yd run under drag. After about 10 minutes Im thinking he sure is staying deep for a king...Hand line the leader, COBIA!!! Ever tried leadering a 25lb cobia with one hand and gaffing it with the other? FUN stuff right there, he hated the fish box, tried to break the lid off I think. Called Capt. Wirt to tell him if he had any big lures to toss them out and kept trolling up the beach. Ended up with 3 spanish and the cobia, the group was having me release all spanish under 18". Beautiful day on the water, 3 hilarious guys, one was getting married the next day so there were talking about all the things NOT to say in their toasts and speeches. Hitting it again the next few days! Pics on a disposable, will post them later after development.
Book your trip now, dates are starting to fill up!!!
