Default rigging question

Hey guys, quick rigging question. When do you use spacers so your hook don't go too far up in the skirt? For example, Rigging an Ilander with 8/0 hook. Would I use spacers when I plan on trolling a ballyhoo on that hook. Or would you only use spacers only if you're trolling without the meat? Right now , as a novice, I'm going to guess that you would only use spacers or beads only when you plan on trolling that skirt meatless. Tell me what you guys do. Thx in advance...David

On a islander the big hole under the skirt is for the bill. Leave about 1/2" of the bill on the ballyhoo then line the eyes if the ballyhoo up with the eyes if the skirt. The offset hole where your leader comes out on the front of the Islander is the top of the lure. Trim the skirt if it is to long. I trim mine down to about four inches and trim all the inside hair out...Mark

so the only reason spacers would be used is if it's meant to be used as a meatless bait then right?

I'm a little different, sometimes I'll space off a ballyhoo with 5-6 beads off the lure head, sometimes keep the meat behind (underneath) the skirt. I've got them rigged both ways, and I've caught fish both ways. I dunno which one is more productive.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what meat you drag, when you're getting hit left and right, it's time to change to the double hook meatless rig and turn and burn!

Jeez, I reread that, and that's as comical as the Talladega Nights shake and bake tag line!
