Default Radar questions

Hi Folks. I've got a question. Does anybody know if raising the radar up a bit off of the hard top will help it's performance much? Say 6 or 8 inches? I've got a JRC 1500 MKII. Sometimes it seems a little cranky as to what it will pick up. I run it in the auto mode mostly because that is what it says to do in the manual. Should I be running it in manual to get some more performance from it?

I had an old radar on another boat that didn't have any stinking auto mode and once I got familiar with it's quirks I could get it tuned in real quickly for the day so I'm pretty good at all the various settings and what they do. I know Glen E had this radar. Any thoughts Glen? I've e-mailed JRC pretty much the same question and am waiting to hear back. I know their customer service is considered real good so I'm hopefull they can help too.

Thanks. CF

Bring it up off the top. Sometimes the radar will not pick up anything right infront or in back as the top is in the way. I would lift it up and correct the angle also.

As for running in auto.... auto is ok but you will get more out of it if you adjust it manually. Hope this helps.

here's a tip that's as big as moving the unit:

go to amazon.com and buy RADAR FOR MARINERS by David Birch - a "radar for dummies" and completly made radar easy for me...(and I had a JRC MK II at that time)...no matter how good your owner's manual is, this is better...a paperback for 15 bucks....

Not me bidding. I heard back from JRC and they said that raising it shouldn't make that much of a difference as long as nothing is blocking the signal. It is a 30 degree vertical beam and I figured it out that a bit of the beam is hitting the hard top with it mounted so low. I might move it up later but I'll play with the manual operation first. Oh, and I did order that book from Amazon. Found it for $9.00.
