I have the Poly Planar MP3 kit in my boat, so far so good. Install is easy and the only things showing in my dash are the plug for your MP3 player and the sweet volume knob which is a decent size since I hate buttons for volume control, you can mount these two things anywhere you want in your dash/console. The sound is great. You turn up the volume all the way on your MP3 player then control the volume from the systems knob, there is even a gain on the amp to fine tune. The 5" speakers do a good job of letting me hear the music at cruise, 4000rpm @ 30mph and plenty loud when idling or on the hook. My Sansa MP3 player has a built in equalizer and works quite well at controlling the bass/treble/mid. For just over $100, it is an easy and cheap way to get tunes in your Montauk.
For a backup I keep a cassette/radio on the boat as well as a cd player with batteries for when the MP3 player's batteries might go out, plug and play.
