I realize this is an old thread but I just bought and activated my SPOT here in SW Florida. My brother had his on the Pacific and it resulted in a lifesaving event after an overnight fishing trip west of Catalina resulted in a boat fire and him having to ditch. After hitting the 911 button on the spot, the Coasties were there in an hour.
SPOT has two great marketing slogans to go with, what IMO, is a great product:
1 - Live to tell about it
2 - Opening this box is the first step toward making sure you don't come home in one.
I got in on a special that ends tomorrow: buy the transmitter for 149 and two years service for 149 each; then get the 149 cost of the tranmitter rebated to you.
A newer, smaller, tranmitter will be debuted in the fall but my budget was happy with the original model. My wife loves the OK messages I send hourly. I programmed my HELP button to send a message to 5 family members telling them to call Sea Tow, gave the number and my member number. My HELP also says, Not a Life Threatening Emergency. I will save that for the 911 button.
