Oregon Inlet Stripers 1-6-11
Left the inlet at about 8 this morning. Ocean was smooth and birds were all around the inlet. Started marking a lot of bait and decided to give it a try right there for a few minutes along with a few other boats. Marked a ton of bait and fish, but no bites for anyone as far as we could see. We picked up lines and scooted over to the Wright bros memorial. There were a lot of boats working this area, but again, nobody was doing anything. Started seeing a mass exodus headed north. Everywhere as far as you could see, every boat around was running north on plane. We started hearing reports of a bite going on at the Duck research pier, so we pulled lines in and made the 11 mile run north. The fleet was definitly at the pier. I'm guessing over 200 boats were fishing a sqare mile of ocean. Within 5 minutes, we had a hookup. Unfortunally, the fish measured 26" so back in he went. Within 3 minutes, a 2nd fish was hooked up. This one made his way back to the docks with us. About that tim, the bite just turned off. We only had a few hours to fish this day, so at about 1:00, we started pulling lines in to head back. I was reaching for the rod that had an umbrella rig on it, when it suddenly got bit. Landed both fish. Biggest was 35". We heard that the afternoon bite turned on later, but not much going on early in the morning. Water temp was 39*2
