I thought since you guys are all chomping at the bit to get out there, I'd post a report
Michael's graduation from NC State was this past weekend. Instead of walking the aisle in cap and gown, he decided to celebrate by heading to Oregon Inlet looking for a tuna bloodbath. I would have done the same thing and I think he made the right call
Yellowfins and bigeyes are in the area but they don't seem to be concentrated heavily in any one spot. The fish are scattered over a wide area from the point all the way to north of the 000's with some boats having banner days and returning early, while others are struggling for bites. A couple of blue marlin were also caught this weekend.
Saturday we put lines in at 6:30 at the 660 line and began plugging away. We had a slow morning while some boats were getting piled on right in sight of us...you just had to get lucky. Ended up getting a decent amount of bites and catching 5 with most being a smaller class of fish. Pulled the hook on 3 more, had some short bites, and got unlucky at the boat with one, breaking it off. Weather was snotty in the morning but settled down nicely throughout the day. Finished up at the 830.
Sunday we started around the same time at the 718. Michael's parents came along today and his dad hadn't ever caught a yellowfin- That would change today. Fished without morning success while the boats at the 900 line got covered up with a good morning bite. Some nice storms rolled in and winds/seas picked up pretty good considering we were in a center console. Had a white bean bag blow out and enjoyed recovering that- that thing was hard to see with all white caps out! Finally things settled down where we could actually get our baits looking right and we started getting some bites. Had some more short bites and ended up catching 3 fish. Called it a day early and headed to the hill just after lunch to get things cleaned up. We finished the day at the 900.
Not a bad way to spend graduation, and glad we got some meat in the box. Waiting on the gaffers...
