This was one of my favorite trips ever. We didn't catch a lot of big fish, but we had our opportunities. On wed, we headed out the inlet about 540. BTW, the green cans are not all in the right place. Be sure and hug the middle of the channel on over to the red cans. A couple of the green cans are actually in shoal water. We ran way down south, all the way to fishing off the towers of Hatteras. We were by far the southern most boat in our group. We quickly found life with birds all over, but after a few bailers and false albies, we decided a move was needed. We ran back north about 10 miles and put lines in. Again, we found plenty of life, but only managed a decent blackfin for a few hours. Late in the day, we trolled up to the Point and managed to put a rookie on his first tuna. That little yellowfin put that king fisherman on the rail a few times We gaffed that fish and headed in not long after. On wed, we had Chris(blueh20pc) and Paul(evilgli) on the boat. We put lines in between the Point and the Tuna Hole. We quickly shook off a peanut, added a blackfin to the box, and later another mahi. We missed the early(before the fleet) morning bite again, so we couldn't buy a yellowfin bite. We did have a big white marlin that ate our short and proceeded to put on a jumping display literally 20 feet off the back of the boat before spitting the hook. That was it for the day. On friday, Alan(headhunt)talked me into fishing with him and Stan on Alan's boat. Let me just say that it is extremely nice to have a crew on board that knows exactly what to do, when to do it, and with speed and efficency. We put lines in close to Seaworld. Overall, on fri, we marked a lot of bait( I really need a good sounder after looking at Alan's furuno all day), but they were all down at 30 fathoms or more. We did manage a very nice bite after running over some of those marks. All I can say is that that yellowfin would have weighed out at least 50 # if we had got him to the boat because we knew when that fish hit, that it was something very nice. Unfortunally 5 minutes into the fight, we pulled the hook. We caught several blackfin that day and a couple of mahi. There were several nice breaks and fish were hanging under them. We found some porpoise pods with yellowfin and white marlin free jumping just ahead of them. Hot lure for the trip was a light blue blue water candy bling skirt over a hoo. Overall, even though we didn't put a lot of yellowfin in the box, this was one of the best trips I've ever been on. Lotta laughs, new sights on the ocean, a beautiful marlin jumping just off the back of the boat, and good food that was cooked by Stan. Here's a few pics.
thanks for having me on the boat David. i had a awesome time even though we didn't get many fish that day..but the look on your face after the marlin getting airborn was something i'll never forget..
Thought some of you would appreciate that! That marlin jumping right off the stern after he ate that BWC was just friggn awesome. I really need to get down there in july and august and try to catch some billfish. Really enjoyed having you on the boat Paul, I'll put you on speed dial for another trip!!
