Default Swords on Discovery channel

Watched the season premier last night on Discovery. Who else watched it last night? Long lining gets a bad name and I saw why last night. "Released" a dead pup sword, and gaffed a mako later in the show that was a "nuisance". That being said, I've always wondered how long lining works, and got a lesson in it last night. 40 miles of main line with 10,000 hooks!

On a side note, did anyone catch the mention of the "Big Eye" being from Wanchese? I'm pretty sure I've seen that boat out of Broad Creek before. The name looked very familar

I missed the show but have heard mixed things. Yes, the Big Eye is from Wanchese.

I watched and thought it was pretty interesting. I was amazed that they have a 1200 mile run. Yeah they did release some fish dead and injured but you know what it happens every single day in the Rec. community also. If you commercial fish there will be dead by-catch.

I want to see how the Big-Eye makes out in those seas which looked like they were building pretty quickly for a 50' boat.

The other thing that amazed me was the 3-hour fight with the giant bluefin, I would have thought with that gear (winch) and all it would have been much quicker.

I've long lined but only for Black Cod and Halibut, and yup, there are thousands and thousands of hooks. When you think of how many hooks we put in there it's a very small percentage of other species we pick up. Occassional Scarlet Rockfish (we call them red snapper or red rocks),,,,,a Ling Cod every once in awhile, maybe a skate here and there, but pretty much catch what we're fishing for. It's changed I know in the years since last commercial fishing, but the fish we catch, other than the skates become awsome meals, shrimp bait, not much waste. I've always enjoyed both the commercial end and the sport end of fishing, most go one way or the other. I missed the show, I'll have to set it up to record automatically for the next show

Thought it was pretty cool. Amazing letting out a 40 mile line . That blew me away. They need to show fishing and not dwell on the "drama" all reality shows seem to highlight. Fat chance!

Well there is a lot of drama, living on a small boat like that for the long periods of time. I know several people from the crews of Deadliest Catch and they're normal, but what they show is real, albeit reality tv. Actually I think they hold back showing the real bad stuff

I have heard some good stories recently about the Capt. of the Big Eye.. David, you are correct they are out of Wanchese!

Seemed kind of funny to me that they are only following 3 boats in the whole show.

They only follow 5 on deadliest catch out of many that are out there, makes pretty good sense to me. The boats they're following are definitly highliners so maybe that the criteria they choose to follow. Don't know anything about the swordfish dudes
