Well went today with a group of guys on the Tuna Teaser in search of the elusive yellowfins and came back empty handed. Couldn't believe how calm it was the entire day....I'm talkin hardly any ripples in the gulf stream AT ALL. Pretty cool. Stopped short of where we wanted to go at a school of pilot whales and couldn't get the second line out in the rigger before we were hooked up. I was thinking it's game on

. but it turned out to be a gaffer.
Left that spot and put in around the point. Picked up another gaffer shortly after that. About 30 minutes after that something is wayyyy back in the spread and we can't figure out what it is. Looks like a billfish but couldn't get a good look at it because the fins were barely out of the water. I've got the rigger in freespool just waiting it out when I get some tension....let him eat it and then tighten the drag...got him on!
It didn't take long to figure out that we were fighting a nice Mako!
Not a blue marlin but a decent consolation prize nonetheless. Got him boatside and guessed him to be a conservative 200 pounder! I haven't heard of many that big being caught on the troll around here so that was pretty cool. Was about to stick him when he finally got a little lit up and made a run...breaking off. I thought we were lucky to get it that far on 100# mono.
Picked up another gaffer when the tuna bite turned on around 2:30. One boat landed five and all the charter boats within 5-10 miles picked up and headed that way. Hundreds of #50-70 tunas are skying out of the water all around us but we can't buy a bite. Got frustrated with this after awhile and called it a day. It was definitely an interesting one!
