Sorry if This is a little long but bare with me......I just returned home from a week at Oregon Inlet NC and the weather was very spotty at best. We only made it out two days. The first day we were covered up with dolphin and only one YFT 50lb class hit the ice. The second day was the first day we have ever really targeted Marlin on my boat. Though I have caught Marlin on other boats as well as my boat while fishing for meat this is the first time I have ever decided to set a Marlin spread. We made the commitment to put our Marilin spread out. It took us a while to set the spread and get it where we felt comfortable with the way everything looked behind the boat. For the first time setting the spread we decided to keep the spread tight to the boat. There were three of us on the boat myself and two good friends Alan and Josh . Although this was the first spread we had ever set specifically for Marlin we knew there were at least 3 Blue bites in this location when we fished two days earlier. We put out Two Mold Craft Chuggers on the riggers a CH Chugger on the long rigger set tight in clean water, Two daisy chains one with a Mold Craft and one with a CH Flat head trailer off the teaser reels. We were also running two dinks off the flat lines for any whites or sails that might decide to come into the spread. About 1 1/2 hours into the troll we had either a white or a sail slapping at one of the Dink baits and dropped back to him with no success as he faded off. After picking our way through the dolphin that wanted to destroy our spread and three and a half hours of trolling the starboard short purple, black, and pearl moldcraft was demolished!! I have heard a lot of reels scream in my time but I had never heard anything like the way that Alutecnos was screaming. In a blink of an Eye the big blue pealed off about 400yds of line as we cleared the spread. Josh started the wide turn paralleling the fish as Alan cleared the spread and put the belt on me. We watched as the Marlin made a series of gray hounding jumps off the starboard side of the boat. The Marlin slowed up a bit and we were able to put some of the line back on the reel but not for long!! The Marlin must have finally figured out he was hooked and it was on. He made another series of gray hounding jumps peeling off 2/3rd of the line off the reel in a single run then finally throwing the hook!!.....I must say I have always been a meat fisherman but the sound of that reel screaming like a train and knowing you cant stop it is the most addicting fishing I have ever done. When you target a fish like that and it all comes together to raise and hook a fish like that is a great feeling. I hope all of you that fish in smaller outboard boats get a chance to experience the pull of a fish like that. We estimated the fish at between 500-600 lbs. We learned quite a bit on that fish and mental notes have been taken for the next trip. Just know we will be back out of OI really soon to give it another go with the Blues............Whew!!!!!!...Mark
Here is a pic if a nice Dolphin we caught while trolling for Marlin....Quite a day!!
