Default Memorial Weekend wrapup

One of the most enjoyable weekends I've had in awhile, but it was straight down to business fishing! Went saturday out of Swansboro with the intention of catching our fill of dolphin to pay for fuel, then billfishing the rest of the day. Put in just short of The Rise in about 20 fathoms and let the fun begin! As Mark said the dolphin bite has been pretty much off the hook everywhere and saturday was no exception....we caught 28 gaffers, a falsie, and a cuda by about 11:00 am and pointed her to the deep. With the tournament going on we heard multiple hook ups and knew we were in the right area, but no love for us with the bills.

Monday was a rough headsea out Swansboro again and we had the same game plan. Stopped her in 15 fathoms but the fishing was considerably slower for us. By 11:30 we had 16 dolphin in the box, along with another stinky barracuda and swapped the ballyhoo out with the plugs. Trolled around for about an hour when CAPOW! short rigger explodes and makes the Top gun rigger double over. Line starts screaming on the 50w....blue marlin! Start clearing lines and 45 seconds later it was all over. Not sure if the fish was just mouthing it or what but it was nice to raise another one up and get her to eat this time. Hopefully my card will be pulled soon...I'm getting frustrated. Picked up another gaffer and that was it for the day. Not a bad way to spend a Memorial Day...

The tuna bite seems a little off right now but hopefully it will turn back on. I think the billfishing will be pretty good up there in a few days...it was off the hook out of beaufort this weekend so they should be pushing up that way here shortly.
