Default Bogue Inlet report Sat

We headed out of Bogue Inlet at a leisurely 7:30. Ran 33 miles out to the doorstep ledge and started trolling. Didn't even have my spread all the way out when BAM!, starboard outrigger screams out. After a 10 minute fight, a 25# king came alongside. I was hoping for a hoo, but I'll take a king. He hit a pink/white illander on a ballyhoo. Nothing after that for a few hours, so we decided to drop some bait to the bottom and catch some BSB. We caught a few BSB, pinkies, and grunts for a couple of hours. No grouper at all. It was so hot that we had to call it quits and start trolling again just to get a breeze blowing. Beautiful day, but hotter than hell. Managed to get a bailer on a daisy chain. Ran back in @ 45 mph just cruising and dodging the warships off the coast that were doing drills. Here's a few pics of the day.

Nice catch Dave....

I got spooled this weekend on a non-meat fish. Bummer.

Next we need to talk about some planers for those wahoo's, that add's another line to your spread. Alan knows how to do them, he showed me. It's cheap and most of the time saves the day when it's hot and the bite is slow. Hot weather=fish down deep, so let's get the lures down there.

Planer has saved many a day for us. I've talked to a few of the mates in Hatteras about their set ups and they all seem to think the bait really doesn't need to be all that deep. 10 to 20 feet is plenty most days. They do use long leaders though. 60 to 100 feet if your running it right off the planer.
Looks like it was a real sweet day out there.

Good Report David!

Hot, yeah I know I was doing some yard work in the afternoon on Saturday and man was it hot!!

I had to work all weekend, so today is my Sunday! Yeah, but the wife has a list a mile long for me to take care of. Most of it is landscaping, guess I need to get to it!

Matt

I have a downrigger that I usually use in situations like that. But with only me and the wife on the boat all day, I didn't want to get it out and explain how to use it to her. Especially when I knew she was wanting to do some bottom fishing. I'll break it out next time.
