Default Where to out of Wanchese!!

I will have some family with me on the boat in July. They are not into fishing. I am looking for a few places to take them by boat?? Not a long run. Any places to anchor out of the way or beach the boat?
I dont ever look for this kind of thing when I go!! I have a one track mind and that is fishing...Thanks Mark

That's a good question! They aren't really any great places to do this that I've found. They might enjoy a little cruise through Manteo or something like that. When I anchor I've gone to that island just east of "pelican" island I think it's called. You take a right like your going to old house and just kind of sneak up in there on the right. Kind of shallow. Also that island straight ahead before the big turn to the crack/OIFC ( it does have that cabin and a pier on it!) but if you go around the other (southern) side there is a nice beach there. Not sure whose it is though....Don't be surprised if you catch a flounder or two there either

Hope that's of some help.

Last year this is what we did. To the west of Ballest Point (Pirates Cove) their is a nice little cove to water ski and anchor. You had maybe 15 feet of sand on the beach. You can also go north of Ballest Point maybe a mile or so and anchor off the beach. It gets real shallow real fast with lots of bars. You can also run down a little south of OI, the Pea Island side on the sound had some small beaches. I'm not sure if that is allowed their or not

Not a great picture but you get the idea, Pink marks the spot

Mark, there are some nice sandy beaches where you can anchor up and let the kids swim on the other side of the sound behind Jockey's Ridge.

And, as Fast said, continue south along the OI bridge, and in Green Isle slough you can anchor up and get out.

Just be careful of the bars in these areas, it gets shallow real quick, and of course you know how the current is.

Mark,
Call me at your convenience. There are a couple nice spots just south of Pirates Cove bridge/ramp. Nice protected beaches with calm water for the little ones and ladies....
Regards,
dave

Dave, Is that the pond a few hundred yards south of the bridge? If it is I nearly sh*t my pants last year their. I pulled up with a buddy of mine who wanted to take some photos of the birds. We were in may 3 ft of water when I looked over my shoulder and saw a nice size dorsal fin cruise by. I never want to be that close to what must have been 6-7 foot shark again

Dave, are you talking about John's ditch? It takes you from PC, then dumps out at the North end of Wanchese by the trailer park. Plenty deep for a big boat.

Mark, there's a cut through the marsh about 100 yds south of the public PC boat ramp that will take you through a ditch, sometimes it's 15 feet, most times it's 4 feet deep, and at the northern end, it has several nice white sandy beaches that you can bump up on and go hang out. It's very protected. I tried it with the Seapro once, but it was blowing SW 25, and I didn't want to get stuck. Mostly I use the John boat there, but if it is calm, I'd definitely recommend it.

Thanks guys!! I have seen the place right south of the bridge. There was a good size Catermaran there a few weeks ago.... I will check out the recomendations you have given. Keep them coming... Dave and Chris I will give you a call the next few days. I might come up and do a little work on the boat this weekend....Thanks Mark

I was thinking of John's ditch too but it can get shallow in spots for that boat i would think... I like those beaches there a lot and yes it goes all the way through if you know what turns to take! I think it's probably 3-4 deep on the wanchese side. Gotta be careful going around those corners- I've almost been run over by wakeboarders a couple of times. I don't know why they do that back there but its annoying...I guess because the water is calm. Good luck.
