I talked to a buddy of mine and here's what I know..

Name of the boat was "Watch Witch" & Dave and I know the owner pretty well as I have fished with him on his old 32 foot regulator here in the past.

Not a whole lot of talking about what has been going on but from what i heard, they were in the Channel just crusing, hit something (to do with the bombing range, can't remember exactly) and the boat sunk in all of 8 minutes.

Yeah, Yeah I know I don't know a whole lot, but I will say the Captain of the Water Witch is a top quality captain, so I guess it can happen to anyone!

yes from what I heard there were only 3 on the boat.

Captain, Mate & the Captains Grandson. All are ok, other than the fact they lost their boat & their entry fee for the Big Rock ($18,000 ish). Oh well...

I sure Dave knows a little more, but I haven't spoken to him.

The Boat (50 ft Carolina Sportfish)was refloated today and towed back to Wanchese and is in the yard. They hit a sumerged "target" ship about 10-15 miles South down the sound from Oregon Inlet. Looks to me like the props/struts hit and literally pulled them out of the boat creating a hole and the boat sank quickly. Water depths in that area are 10-15 ft. This was an expercienced crew that knew those objects are there. Thankfully all is well !

That is a shame. I may be wrong but I think that boat (sculley?) was just in the yard at wanchese before this. That range claimed a big hatteras a few years ago. I understand they were experienced, but why take the risk of running through the range when its only going to save you 15 minutes???

The name "Water Witch" must be jinxed. The one that sank Sunday is a different boat from the Scully mentioned by Tuna. That one is still on the rack at the Scully yard in Wanchese after it hit something off Charleston and sank up to the headliner in the salon. Both boats yellow and named "Water Witch" Hmmmmm.
Regards,

Weird. That first water witch had run aground outside florida but they got off thinking there was no damage. Handed the boat over to another guy to take it up north and the laminate started peeling off. Apparently the guy(s) were inexperienced and abandoned after hearing sea tow wouldn't come. Well they finally did and all the sea tow guy had to do was flip the crash pumps and the boat could be salvaged. More hearsay is that the tow company got possession of the boat and that's why its getting repaired at sculley now.
