Default Fished yesterday

We made a last second decision yesterday morning to take off work and try to catch a cobia since a few were seen and caught on Monday. We ran out the inlet around 11:00 and headed south. We ended up seeing about 5 cobia but we never got a good shot at any of them. Heck we ran over the top of a pair just outside the inlet on the way in. Everyone one we saw were all on the small side but an 82 pounder was caught yesterday morning by the Fishing Fool charter. All in all it was a beautiful day on the water and the beer was nice and cold. We did have a nice catch of spanish and bluefish on the spoons.

Bluewater:

I am heading down this weekend and might try to take my 7 year old out for some Spanish fishing. Do you mind sharing if you caught them close to the inlet or further south? Also, any pattern to the depth? Seems like last year that I caught them in deeper water than usual.

Thanks for any info that you can share.

We caught them from the boiler (just south of the inlet) and all the way to Rodanthe. We caught them close to the beach and also a mile or two out. There was tons of balls of bait up and down the beach. We were concentrating on catching a cobia so we did not fish for them too hard. We only had a couple of rods out with clark spoons(one gold and one silver) and trolling sinkers with about 25' of leader. I would usually use a #1 planer but we used trolling sinkers so we could snatch them out of the water quick if we need to make a quick turn on a cobia. It was enough action to keep the guys in back back of the boat entertained while we were in the tower. Good luck!!
