Default Credit limit @ gas pumps

Not wanting to start a gas thread here, but had an interesting problem this weekend. We needed app. $450 in gas this weekend for the boat, but the station we stopped at would only pump gas in $75 increments, and you could only do that 3 times before the credit fraud deal on your credit or debit card would shut you down. I offered to give the attendant my card so she could swipe when I was done, but that wasn't an option. So... Are there gas stations on the way to Morehead or on the way to OI that you don't have to worry about this. Thx.....David

Well I'm not sure about your problem but there are places in Raleigh that shut me off at $50! That's only giving me about half a tank and causes for an extra stop on trips...

This problem is a PITA. I can't understand why the owners of gas selling enterprises don't make the pump limit in gallons, not dollars. Sometimes I can't fill my truck because of the limit, and it only has a 34 gallon tank. Capt. Fred's Hydra-Sports has a 195 gallon tank, but the station at Frisco Rod and Gun has no problem putting whatever we want to put in the boat on a credit card, wish all of them were that way.

Its not the gas stations it is your credit card company. There was a report on the news about it last night. The Credit Card Companies do it to combat fraud. It is a PITA no doubt. The credit card Companies dont plan on changing it from what they said on the news....Mark

Then why is it some places you can get only $50 and some places you can get $75? Could it be a combination of both? I did ask the attendant if I could give her my card and pay for it all inside, but that wasn't an option.

It cost me about $75 to fill up my Tahoe, and here on the Outer Banks the local Crown Stations cut you off at $50. They tell me that if you go inside first and give them your card and give them an idea on how much fuel you need they can "pre-authorize" your card and you can pump away.

Not sure if that goes for $450, but who knows.

You think that's bad... try a marine fuel dock with a $100 limit on the pump itself - fine for most locals filling a skiff, but when I show up looking for 200 gallons of #2, it takes a while.

They'll turn the pump back on, but you have to ask at the desk... I've taken to just sending my deckhand up the ramp to the store (about 1/4 mile up the mountain...) with the hand-held. It took 10 resets to get 200 gallons out of 'em last summer... I shudder to think how little of my tank will fill on each set this year!

Dave you will have to ask your credit card Co. about that. I think AMEX has a different Cap than MC or Visa. What card were you using?..Mark

I just joined and couldn't resist replying. Filled up my Grady White Cat April 26th & 27th and the pump limit varied by station. A BP in Mt. Pleasant, SC stopped the pumps at $75 but the pumps at Isle of Palms Marina did not stop. Used the same Amex card both times.
