I was using my regular visa debit card from my bank. I don't know what my credir card(mastercard) stops at. I tried to prepay $400 or $200 inside the store. That was a nogo? what's interesting is that at another store, there was no cutoff on the same card. I filled my truck up with $89 with no cutoff at all. But, I called my bank today and they told me that is my card. They have a $75 cutoff on it to "protect me". I told her I appreciate them protecting me and that's fine when gas is only $2.00, but that it was time to catch up with the times. Her suggestion was that I should just do like I did this weekend( put the max allowed 3 times, then go to another gas station and finish there.) I asked her what sense did this make? Not only do I have to make 2 stops and put my card through the machine app 5 times, but I also have my bank calling and leaving messages asking if someone has stolen my card! Just another PITA with the cost of gas nowadays

I had the same issue on the way to the OBX event last year. After it cut off the first time the lady in the store said it was the credit card company. I called the credit card company while I was standing there and they said it was the store that set the limit. I ended up just giving her the card, she set the pump for cash and then ran the card for the total at the end. I think they all could do that if you don't run into an escaped window licker behind the counter.

You will find VISA and MC all cut off now at $75, AMEX is up to $100 and some of the corporate cards will allow more, I know some up to $500. It is really up to the station, they can still pre-auth. so you can fill it up. They just don't want to get stuck when you pump $500 and have no way to pay!
I tell you what when this first started and the cutoff was $50 I always said they were just hurting themselves. I am not one to stand there and re-swipe my card.

I'm not sure when it started but the 1st time I ran into it oddly enough was on the Outer Banks in Nags Head last August. We just made the 7 hour drive and were waiting for the cleaning folks to get the house done. I figured it was a good time to fill the truck and boat (still on the trailer). The BP in Nags stopped at $50.00 had the guy reset it for another $50.00 tried to do a third time but the guy said come back in 24 hours. Lucky for me my little Whaler only has a 26 gallon tank.

I'm pretty used to it now. My Suburban takes 42 gallons to fill up from empty and my boat takes plenty more. Around here it's been the norm for a while it seems like. I bought my truck over two years ago and the day I bought it I went to fillerup and I had to put the card in twice because it cut me off at $75.

This is one reason why I own both MC and V long!

Keep on swiping guys!

Hehe, just kidding.

The smaller gas stations on the obx, notably shell, will pre-authorize the sale if you go in first before pumping and explain the situation.

I put $200 dollars of diesel per day in the work truck, and I frequent a shell station, who automatically turns the pump on when I pull in. The corner of lakeside and the bypass in south Nags Head.

One question for you guys.

When you swipe your card...do you run it as a debit, or credit?

Reason I ask is I noticed that if I run my VISA card as a debit, it will stop the pump at $75. If I run it as a credit, it will allow me to go over $75. My truck takes almost $100 in diesel to fill it up. I haven't exceeded $100 at the pump yet so I'm not sure where it stops.
