Default Hatteras Fri and Sat

Well, it looks like the weather may hold for Fri and Sat. (Knocking on wood) I'll be down in Hatteras at Village Marina. Boat name is Strider. We generaly monitor 1, 16, and 68. We should be getting down there at 10PM or so on Thursday night. Probably follow the charters out on Friday.

Anybody else going down?

Ken

Headhunt will be out and about on both days, he's on the road tomorrow am.

I got a ride with him and crew tentatively scheduled on Saturday.

I've got an empty fridge/freezer so I hope to bring some luck and get my skunk off his boat.

He's staying across from Oden's dock.

Thanks Mark. I hear south is the way to go too. Chris, we'll be right there in the basin. Probably on the side of the Village Marine building. If we have any big fishing news from Friday I'll stop by with it.

Both them boys are sleeping right now, but I'm jacked up, first trip this year offshore and all..

Headhunt had a few 'hoos and gaffer dolphins and a bailer or two, no less than 10 knockdowns today, little rough, he was down to the 900 line.

Rockpile had a 2pm YFT bite with all 8 rods knocked down at once. Charter outfit.

Capt Fred had had a good day with some gaffers and bailers, and a mystery bite.

I'm ridin with Capt Fred in the am if the weather holds out.

Gota get up at 3:30am for that ride, Damn! Might as well not go to bed!

Ok, I'm back. We had a decent weekend. On Friday we ended up with three gaffers and a couple of other knockdowns. One mahi was a 33 lb cow. The weather was beautiful. Much of the fleet went on down to the 850 line and I guess there was a crowd down there. It sounded real spotty for them too from what we saw back at the dock. We were at the triple zeros and a bit south. The bites came on the drone spoon behind the planer and the good ole blue and white ilander/bally combo.

On Saturday Chris (blueh20pc) joined us and we had a bit of a rough ride out to the rock pile. We fished from the pile out to about 50 fathoms without a sniff in the morning and then trolled back to the rock pile. We finally found some fish on the eastern corner. Picked away at them and ended up with 4 gaffers and a wahoo. Missed a couple more bites. Chris made a great save on the hoo at the boat when I blew the gaff shot and it ran under the boat and motors. He got it slipped off of the lower unit before it wrapped up and I got it on the next pass.

The hoo hit a black and red ilander/bally and the mahis were a bit mixed on seawitch bally combos and the blue and white ilander again.

Water was in the low 70's. TONS of flying fish. We marked some OK bait at about 20 fathoms down but there just didn't seem to be much going on. Several boats ended up skunked of with just a fish or two. It seems they got into the tuna a bit better up near the 230 rocks from what we heard.

We headed in early on Saturday due to the conditions out at the rock pile. I've seen the inlet real ugly in a southwest swell and I didn't want to go through that again! Based on the tide the day before I wanted to beat the ebb. Got in before the tide really got ripping but it was much calmer inside so I think we could have stayed out another couple of hours. Oh well. There's some saying about discretion and valor but mostly I just don't like getting the crap scared out of me when I'm fishing!

Thanks again Chris and I really hope to do it again.

Talking

We had a gorgeous day!

Capt Fred was missing a man this weekend so I bummed a ride on his vessel, and what a ride! Real snotty on the way out, there was many a time when I wanted to crawl down into the cabin and wait till we got there.

We got to the rock pile and picked up a borderline gaffer right off the get go. We tried some deeper water, and there was plenty of life, but just no bite.

Headed back to the rockpile, and picked up the wahoo. It looks pretty good cooked up, there's a picture below. That fish came in really green, and we had some trouble getting him to the boat, as Ken said.

We moved off the structure, got some pictures of Headhunt's boat trolling around, and watched his crew get wacked right beside us. We circled around and had a knockdown right in the area.

About 30 minutes later, we were trolling the same area, and I was rigging some lighter colors, just finished rigging a pink/blue/white seawitch to throw on the long rigger, threw it out and the planer went off. Nice bull Mahi, Ken saw it jump and it was a nice fish, maybe a 25-30 lb'er. No sooner than I had the rod out of the holder than the port flatline went off on the pink/white seawitch with another 13 lb gaffer hooked up.

I pumped maybe tooo hard, and I dunno what happened, but that mahi either spit my hook, or the planer dug in and it ripped it right off the hook. But damn, that was nice fish, and it earned it's freedom.

Switched to pit duty and we got Ken's fish in. But I still curse that Bull, he got the best of me.

Ken (wisely) called it at 2pm, that SW wind was nasty all day, and we had envisioned a 14kt ride home, plus the nasty inlet. We made it in at 24 kt's, but, like he said, better to err on the side of caution, and thank God we were fishing on a WA with full curtains, the spray was about downright nasty.

Anyways,

Thanks to Gary and Ken for inviting me out, and showing me a few tricks. As much as I think I know, I love fishing with other guys, because everytime I go out with a new crew I learn so much in one day, that I think I don't know anything at all.

The day ended up so great, I thought I'd add just one picture of dinner tonight. This is grilled Wahoo, with rice, black beans, bread, salsa, and Old Bay covered French Fries. Wahoo was coated in a cilantro/butter/olive oil/garlic sauce. I gave some of my catch to AllBowedUp, and he came up with this recipe, right off the top of his head. Man, this is straight gourmet!

Ken, whenever you guys are down fishing, gimme a call, cause I wanna go again! Thanks for a great day!

Just to add...and toot my own horn...

I was the gaffman extroardinaire yesterday.

All head shots, no meat wasted. All on 4 hours sleep.
