Default Coast Guard training fun

Eric Peterson (Honda Dude) sent me these shots of the Coast Guard doing big wave practice on 12/4/07 at Morro Bay. The boat is a 47 footer and it made it through. How, I cannot explain. I'm glad I was not aboard.........

They had one at the "Day at the Docks" in Hatteras this year. I got to crawl all over it. Awesome boat.

They must be pretty well self righting also. This shot shows it almost on its side, yet it recovered just fine. If you were on it at that moment, would you be more concerned that your were capsized or facing the next wave that you can see coming in? The surf was very big on the West Coast that day.

When I was on the boat in Hatteras a buddy (fishbard here) noticed that on the main cabin hatch the instructions for operating the latches were written right side up and, at the bottom of the hatch, upside down!

It is incredible what these guys do. I believe that they are harnessed in at the helm, so that everybody stays aboard. The vessel is definitely self-righting, and there is some video on the internet that I saw, showing them running thru surf like this, on the Columbia River. The vessel does a complete 360 rollover, and everybody is still at their stations. Filming was done by another CG vessel running along with them!

Wow!

Looks scary as heck. Yet, strangely enough, like fun too.

Thanks for sharing the photos.
