Default EFI or CARB 2001 Mercs - Which is Better

I have a line on some 2001 Carb 150 HP Mercs. I am not sure if I should get carb motors at this point in the game.

They were just rebuilt. I get the whole set up for $8000 (both motors, guages, controls, tanks, wiring, but no props).

Is that a good deal you think. What do you guys think.

Are these reliable motors.

This really comes down to the fact that I am on a budget.

I have a 2000 Hydra-Sports Vector 2390CC (That I fixed, it was stripped).

I can tell you that these motors are very thirsty. I would think $6000 is more in line for the 2001 150s. There are some nice low original hour motors here for $8000 and that includes all gauges oil tanks etc. But they are 225 EFIs. The old carb Merc 225 I had was extemely reliable and very easy to work on if I wanted to doe the service or updates...Mark

Default I thought they might be thirsty

I would really think I would be better off with some fuel injected motors. I was just wondering about those cause they were rebuilt. that certainly doesn't make them fuel efficient.

Oh ya, my boat is only rated for 350hp. I will finish up here in Iraq sometime next summer. I am looking to buy some motors by the time I come home in Feb on leave.

I would like to get 150's or 175's but what ever I get will have to be on a budget, cause uncle sam likes me but not that much, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the input,

Jim

Jimbo0,

Too bad your boat is only rated for 350 hp. My Merc 225 EFI's have less than 300 hours and have been reliable trouble free motors. I'm "asking" $8K for mine. Everything, of course, is negotiable especially in this market. See my add in the for sale section.

So the boat is rated for "X" horsepower and the engines are "Y" horsepower?
This is problem because of what? I don't think I've ever owned any boat or car that I felt had too much power. I've also done 185 on the water. So maybe I'm nuts, but after spending the time you have in Iraq, put 'em on and have fun. If you need a bigger capacity plate, I'll make you one, OK?

Insurance company may not write policy if overpowered or if they do, may add surcharge.

The boat hp. rating is there for a reason. Its not just whatever motors or plate they happen to have at the factory the day they were built. For more power the transom or transon hull joints might have to be beefed-up.

Hope you have a safe tour and trip home.

Maybe. More likely the rating is a liability issue. I would go for the 225s' in order to get a good deal and throttle back to cruise speed.

I would be more concerned with the weight issues, if the weights are within
specs I would be okay with it. I would check the insurance to see what the costs would be, probably not much of a difference.

Where else can you sit in your underwear and converse with people all over the world.

I had a carbed Merc a few years older than that. It was an anvil - bulletproof. I loved that motor, but that was when gas was $1.50 a gallon. I don't even know how much it used because I didn't care at that price. It was a strong, reliable motor that I actually wish I still had today for a skinny water boat.
