merc fuel filter tool
one of the most odd shaped filters on any motor I've seen is the "castle " head fuel fiilter on verados and opti's. You can take it off with a short screw driver but if it's expanded a bit from ethanol or age, you usually end up slipping and scratching something or messing up the filter head. It also a joy to use in 3 -4 foot waves. Merc has come out with a star shaped tool that fits the head perfectly using a std socket wrench. ..all of 5 bucks on ebay - search for "verado". Used it today for the first time and it's the only way to go vs a screwdriver....

sorry sir, I have not run racors on my boat since 99 and then I had the std metal kind you throw away...I'm sure many here have the glass bottom kind...I think you just unscrew or drain thru the valve...

Roger that , I think Daddy O has a racor wrench I can use as I can't get it loose by hand.
It's like the Gaskets swell up and make it real tight.

agreed - as ethanol comes on stream, all filters will get tighter...I put a bit of dielectric grease on the top threads and hand tighten to keep this to a minimum.....

Those Racor wrenches look weird, but work like a champ. You can get 'em at West Marine and they are not expensive. I finally got tired of using water pump pliers and making the bowl look ugly.

Welder - You can get the wrench from WM or SIM for about $10. You also need a standard oil filter wrench to hold onto the filter canister. The O ring between the clear bowl & filter cartridge must be changed if you remove the bowl. I bought a bunch from SIM. This only matters if you are removing the bowl and not changing the filter. New filters will come with a new gasket & O ring
