Default Scout tank problems

So I have a 23' Scout center console. Looked under the console yesterday and saw that the only 4 screws holding the gas tank in had pulled out which allowed the tank to shift aft about 4 inches. There's apparently nothing else holding the tank in place except for 2 tabs welded on the front of the tank, each tab held in by 2 lag bolts. Bout 10 minutes later while changing out batteries (not much fun in this boat) I discover that my freshwater tank in the bow is completely unsecured; I'm able to reach a foot in and move it all around (the tank that is). I really love my boat but what the heck is with this? Though I'm not happy about having to do it, the gas tank repair isn't rocket science (after I get 140 gallons of fuel out of it) but I'm not sure what to make of the fw tank; I saw no means of it being mounted in place. Any thought/info/experience on this one?

Have you called Scout on these issues? I had 2 Scouts in my past and their customer service was top notch.

I did contact Scout, they told me it's not covered under the hull warranty. It happens that I was going to Charleston last weekend anyway so I popped in the factory to see what I could learn. They were very helpful. We discussed the proper repair and they gave me all the info and materials I'll need (hardware, foam, 5200). So after I burn 130 gallons of fuel this weekend running up and down the lake; I'll be hitting that job. Not the most prefereable outcome but at least I know it'll be done right.

Gator,,,if you don't mind me asking,,how are you going to fasten the tank to the deck?
The S/S togglers I posted have helped me on many projects. They are very nice!

Capt Rick,
Don't mind at all. The tank has tabs welded flush to the bottom of the tank. These tabs were drilled and mounted to the deck with lag bolts. The underside of the decking is backed up by a composite material ( approx 1/2" sheet, can't think of the name of it) designed to give the bolts/screws something to bite into. My intent is to drill 2 new holes in the tabs and install new bolts. I may double them up by replacing the stripped screws as wll after putting 5200 in the holes. I will also put 5200 between the tabs and the decking. Finally, the factory reccomendation was to foam the tank in place. After all this, I can't imagine them pulling out again. I appreciate the toggle bolt tip but I not quite getting how they work or would be installed.

Its pretty simple. They work almost like a regular toggle bolt but the white plastic tab is like a wire zip-tie that holds the stainless steel part in place so you can run your 1/4" machine screw (Not a lag bolt) through the tank, through the deck and in to the toggler that would be under the deck.

For the 1/4" size you will need to drill a 1/2" hole to put it through.
Its what I used to hold my trolling motor on the bow of the boat.
They are great when you cant get to the back of your bolt to put a nut on it. Like a pedestal seat in a deck.

Here ya go,,,,ya drill a 1/2" hole through the deck,,,,then you pivot the toggle so it will slide through the hole.

Then you slide down the tab "A" flush with the top of the deck. It holds the toggle in place under the deck (It locks in place like a wire tie).
Then you cut off the handles "B" with a set of side cutters.

All you do then is slide your tank into place and run your 1/4" bolt through the bracket and then down into the toggle and tighten the shit out of it.............

A lot of people dont know about these,,I think they are cool as hell! Saved my ass more than once....

O-Yeah, Im not a big fan of lag bolts in a deck of a boat. They dont last........

Aahh, I see now. Great pics/explanation..thanks. It does look interesting and worthy. One question; when you tighten the shit out of it, does it squirt out the top or run out the bottom? Just kidding... I might just have to use your trick..thanks again
