Default cabella's AGM batt - WTF?

no longer will I recc the cabella batt...the next best choice is the odyssey....but much more money..I am exploring other opt's.......

my on line chat with cabellas:

Betty N.: Hi, my name is Betty N.. How may I help you?
glen: whay have the angler AGM batts spec's been cut in half? a groupp 24 batt now shows with 50% of the batt specs that were there for the last 2 years....
Betty N.: I am going to transfer you to someone who will assist you with your technical questions.
Transferred To Mitch B
Mitch B: Hi Glen, What can I do for you?
glen: why have the angler AGM batts spec's been cut in half? a groupp 24 batt now shows with 50% of the batt specs that were there for the last 2 years....
Mitch B: Let me look, do you have the item number?
glen: you can get it faster than me..
glen: advanced angler AGM batt - group 24
Mitch B: Ok, then I will find it, one moment please.
glen: still there?
Mitch B: The correct numbers for the group 24 batteries are 650 for MCA, 560 CCA, and 178 Reserve capacity. The reason for the change, looks like it could be one of two reasons. Either it was a misprint in the previous catalogs, or the manufacturer made a change in the battery.
glen: this is a major problem...I am the founder of the Mercury veradoclub.com and recommend this batt for all members...I own 4 that have been flawless for 3 years...the Verado outboards require 1000 mca which the 24's have always been rated at 1195....if this is true, I can no longer recommend this batt...I have sold at least 250 batts for you. asking nothing in return..it's just the best value out there...PLEASE LOOK INOT THIS AND RETURN A MESSAGE TO MY EMAIL...GLEN@VERADOCLUB.COM... thi is serious reveune loss for you if this is true.....
Mitch B: Unfortunately sir, this is true, those numbers that I have are the most current information we have on those batteries.
Mitch B: Is there anything else I can help you with?
glen: no thanks
Mitch B: Thank you for visiting Cabelas.com. Have a great day!

greg -

I really doubt the cabella AGM was "small" all along, as everyone who puts one in reports no problems...and the "electrically thirsty" Verado will throw off major alarms if small bats are used....I'm stymied....and who the hell is gonna pay what cabella's wants for 650 MCA?

Glen: I just bought 4 Odysseys for the Venture. I bought the same ones that I put in the Jupiter a year ago and the price had gone up 40 percent. I said "Whoa, is that right?" and was told they had two price increases in August alone because of the price of lead. Odyssey's claim to fame is that they use 99.99 percent pure lead and no recycled material because it usually has too much zinc and antimony in it and reduces the power output. All their lead comes from one mine that they own.

So, I guess Cabella's choice is to hold the price the same and cut the quality of the battery.

Yikes, I was considering them for next springs new batts. I guess not. Glen, do you think they changed them or have they been overated the whole time? The specs seemed awesome for a battery in that price range. Bummer. (Edit) Never mind I see you already answered the question. We all must have been typing at once.

Could you contact the actual battery manufacturer & verify their datasheet specs against what Cabella's is listing?

I bought the Odyssey PC1500DT's which have a MCA rating of 1050. They weigh about 50 pounds and are about 11 x 7 x 8 so they fit in a group 24 battery holder. Minimum advertised price on them is about $250.00

The closest equivalent of a group 27 is a PC1700T at 23 x 6.62 x 7 high. They put out 1175 MCA. M.A.P. on them is about $270.00

The bigger brother is the Group 31 at 1370 MCA. It is 13 x 6.8 x 9.8 and weighs 78 pounds. MAP is about $344.00, but if your starter would hold up, you could probably get back to the dock if you ran out of fuel.....

There's also a possibility that the battery is unchanged and that the ratings were corrected to match what it really does. It always seemed to be much better than the competition in the ratings area. Do both "versions" weigh the same?

dunno..but i have seen what happens with 600 MCA batts and verados..they go batsh** with alarms and blown alternators...with the Cabella AGM they are fine...so I don't think they have always been "small"

I don't mean to derail your thread Glen but do you know the life expectancy of these batteries? I change my "regular" batts every two years. Can I get a lot more out of these hybrid types?
