Default Get yourself some aluminum....

As much as I love offshore fishing, I had a rare opportunity tonight.

I just got done cruising the Albemarle Sound in the BAMFish 14' Lowes aluminum battlewagon, with the bulletproof 6 hp 1974 Johnson tiller, and watching the sunset. I cruised around at better than .8 GPH.

Regrettably, I didn't have enough time to bring fishing poles along for this evening cruise. I did remember the cooler.

I had some problems, tho...Motor wouldn't start on the third pull, and it's been outside sitting in water for 2 months now. Spark plugs had some corrosion on the capacitor ends, so I took my car key and scratched them a few times, then reinserted the boots. Fired right up on the third pull, just like ever. I felt stupid, for sitting at the dock waiting thinking it was flooded.

Sometimes, I miss the old days when everything was just simpler. Seems the older, and the more toys you get, the more complicated life in general gets.

It was nice to just cruise around in the sound, not worrying about sandbars, lights, sinking, getting home on time, waves, weather, fishing, electrical, fuel problems, gas bills, etc.

I burned about .3 gallons cruising for 45 minutes at 12 MPH. The deepest I went was 5 feet. I watched the sunset and then headed back in to the dock at the last possible minute.

I had a hankerin for setting out my crab pot, but I don't have a permit for this year, so I need to update that. But all that defeats the purpose of just being on a boat with no worries.

Yeah, Chris, you may be on to something. My brother who has a 50 ton license and has been a lot of places in the world on boats, says the ideal boat is a canoe. No fuel consumption and you don't need a trailer. Sometimes less is more.

Off topic question

Whats the deal with a crab permit? I didn't know you needed a permit to put out crab pots. I couldn't find any info about them on the North Carolina DMF.

Yes, you need a rec permit to launch up to 5 pots personally. Unless they are tied to your personal dock.
